Visually determining the amount a valve is opened or closed may be limited. Compared to a rising stem that can easily be see from a distance a non-rising stem (on larger valves) is fitted with a moving indicator on the valve stem that lines up with a scale mounted to the bonnet. Due to its smaller size and location on the valve it may not be visible fom all directions and might not be easily viewed from a distance.

A valve stem is the port on a wheel that allows the tire to be pressurized. They are typically spring-loaded devices that admit air when the external pressure is greater than the internal tire pressure to allow filling.

They are more complicated inside - since the valve part has to move up and down while the handle does not - and thus more prone to problems and more costly to make.
