A globe valve is designed for flow regulation!
A gate valve is not designed for flow regulation but either fully open or closed.

A globe valve derrives its name from the shape of its body which is spherical or globular in shape. But since other types of valves like ball valve may have a similar shape it is important to verify the actual type by inspection.

The internals of a globe valve consist of a circular opening called a seat cast and machined with a slight taper into the body of the valve. The orientation of the seat is perpendicular to and centered to the valve stem. Attached to the valve stem is a circlar machined part which is also tapered called a disc. The tapered surfaces between the seat and disc form the sealin surfaces of the valve. These surfaces are also made of tough materials with good errosion resistance such as monel.

As the stem is turned the disc moves closer or further away from the disc. This up and down movement between the seat and disc controls the size of an annular openeing between teh seat and disc. The tapered fit between the seat and disc combined with the pitch of the valve stem offeres gradual control of the annular opening and hence fluid flow in the valve.

Adjusting the taper and shape of the disc and thread pitch of the stem allows tailoring of the opening/ closing flow characterisitcs.

By and large, globe valves are not designed to regulate flow. They will work better than your gate valve for this, however; due to the fact that the surface area of the closure element is much greater, circular, and therefore more conducive to flow.

In fact some gate valves are equipped with a "recirc" line that allows for the equalization of pressure on each side of the closure element, allowing for finer adjustment.

The globe valve is not ment for regulating waterflow, it is only for opening and closing. If you try opening one you will find that it is not like the tap at the bathroom sink.It lets water out almost all at once.It is widely used in places where flow regulation is not needed (e.g.filling up a pool) because it's cheap and simple and needs little repair.
