Take some measurements of your room, including height, and head over to the web site of whatever local source you have for paint. Lowes, Home Depot, and I'm sure others, have online paint color selection systems that also include paint requirement calculators that let you enter measurements plus # of doors & windows. They will tell you how much paint you will need. You can then shop online or run down to the store to check the prices. For one room it shouldn't be too much, particularly if you don't get fancy with faux finishes & such.
Note: The bigger paint & home improvement stores will also have computers there to do the paint selection & quantity calculation.

I don't know I never asked how much paint will run for it usually runs for nothing...... Ok I'm sorry I just had to be a smarty pants. Um.. I am not sure what paint costs anymore I live in an apt and I have to look at horrible cheaply painted matte powerdery finshed white walls that you can't wipe with a rag or the paint comes off with it. So I have no clue on that if you have your own home buy really good expensive nice paint that way it's thicker and doesn't take as many coats and it looks nicer longer. And also when it's thicker it runs a whole lot less.....

WalMart has really good paint (their brand Color Place, Dutch Boy and Kilt). They carry all the tools you'll need. A tapered brush for painting around windows and doorways. Or a trim pad works very well. You'll need a paint pad, they're great or use a roller. Don't forget a paint pan, and your good to go. Tape around windows and doors trim. If you load your pad or roller with too much paint it will run, otherwise you'll do fine. Cut in (paint) about a 2 inch strip around the ceiling, windows and doors, then roll. get your roller as close as possible without actually touching the part you DONT want to paint. If you go with a neutral color, you could paint the walls and ceilings the same color. It fools the eye to make the room look bigger. Always paint the ceiling first, cut in then walls. Good Luck :)

Paint can cost between $13 and $35 a gallon. You can save a considerable amount of dough if you shop around for mistints. These are paints that were custom mixed for someone that didn't like how they turned out. You can usually find mistints for about $5 a gallon.
You can even experiment with different colors (in very small amounts, of course) and get your own custom colors.
The cheaper tools work just fine for one or 2 jobs and you can usually do a room with about $25 in plastic drop cloths, rollers, and sponge brushes.

Before you buy any paint, go to the local paint store and ask to look at the mis-tinted paint. It is good paint, someone just didn't like the color. If you wait until spring, the selection can be really good and they sell it for about half price.
Be sure to get enough though, you may have trouble matching it.

You can get a good "one coat" brand at Wally World for about $16 but, if you are going dark you may want to do 2 coats. You can get brushes from a dollar or two on up....rollers are about 3 bucks for 3, but you'll need the Handel which is a couple dollars, they usually have a tray and roller combo for about 7-8 dollars and don't forget the plastic drop cloth....I would say it shouldn't be over 30 or 40 dollars....you can buy a 4 dollar plastic drop cloth and pitch it.

a 12 x 12 room with 8 foot cealings will require about 2 gallon. good paint will run 10-18.00 a gallon you will need a trim brush, a roller, tape and tarp that will cost about 50.00
you could do it for about 90-100.00
dark colors will bleed through lighter color so go with the same color
