A lot of people hold on to childhood fears when they become adults. They can also resurface due to traumatic events or frightening experiences. I laughed through the entire movie "Darkness Falls" with all of my friends, but most of us were then up half the night afraid to turn out all the lights or look around the dark room. I know it sounds kind of silly, but it is normal. It is only not normal if it starts to get in the way of your normal daily functions.

Adults get Night Terrors just like children do, and so they leave a light lit to help them deal with it. We need the dark to sleep because it helps us to get a better night's sleep; the body actually needs the dark for this. But if an adult has Night Terrors, then the dark is not their friend; he/she most likely has a sleep disorder. Night Terrors are classified as a Parasomnia. A Sleep Specialist can give an adult a test called a polysomnogram- an overnight sleep study given by a doctor. The polysomnogram charts brain waves, heart beat, and breathing during sleep. It also records arm and leg movement. This shows if there are other disorders present, such as Sleep Apnea, which could be causing sleep problems. Look for a Sleep Center near you if you need further answers to these questions and know that you are not alone- over 30% of Americans suffer from some type of sleep disorder.

I agree with the first answer. I am not afraid of the dark. I know that nothing magically appears when the lights are off. I am afraid still sometimes at what might be lurking there that I cant see. lol. I'm a fan of night lights. Mine is the television or a door left slightly ajar.

I had a fear of the dark when I was young, and my family loved practical jokes. You can see where this is going. I have been locked out on the spookiest nights in bad storms by people who thought they were the best at pranking, and cousins had scratched my window at 3am just to duck down out of sight.
I lost my fear when I was fourteen, camping out at a scout jamboree. We did not sleep all week, night was all about capture the flag and trying to take prisoners. I learned that darkness was my friend, and to be used to my advantage.
So I will say to you, if you still fear the dark, the dark won't hurt you, there may be something in the dark that you can't identify that scares the snot right out of you. but the dark is harmless.

I am 27 and still feel uncomfortable in the dark when I am sleeping alone. I prefer to leave some night light on or have my TV the sleep mode until I fall asleep. I don't know the reason why - it just feels uncomfortable. However there are times when I like darkness.
