Isn't it an arogant act to believe there is no god? No one knows everything. I've always thought you must really have to hate god to be an athiest. Is it fair to say athiests have had a terrible event in their life that causes them to believe there is no god? It is an unprovable thing. AM I right or not? I really want to hear from an athiest who is intellectually honest.

A true Atheist does not hate God, because a true Atheist does not believe God exist.

The definition of atheism is essentially a belief that a god doesn't exist. It's not arrogance to believe that there is no god because no one knows everything, and one can't "know" god. It's not fair to say atheists hate god or that they had some terrible event that caused them to believe there's no god, as that's not true for many (doubtless it's true for some).

Most of the time it's one of three things (I think). First, there is no proof that a god exists, nor is there anyway to prove (definitively) that a god exists. Second, there is no point to believing in a god because nothing will change if one does or doesn't. Third, take a look at all the religions and all the gods, and how every religion claims theirs is the one true god(s); how can one reconcile this? It would make some kind of twisted sense to say that the "true god" behind all religions is the same, but it's just as easy to say that god is a fabrication of culture and the human mind.

They reject God because something happened in their lives that lead them to think that God let them down.
Maybe they lost a loved one, got molested as a child or something less severe like getting caught stealing.

A lot of it is arrogance and GUILT that they cannot cope with so they instead choose to hate someone or everyone.
Call it lazy hate, if they can hate God everyone else comes with it too.

Don't forget, people are people, which means some people only feel better about themsleves when they have someone else to look down on.

That in itself is a form evil that they will continue to feed.

I try not to be arrogant (though I probably have messed up a time or two). I don't hate god because I don't believe in god. I also don't believe in unicorns. They might exist but I don't hate them - I'm just betting that they aren't real.

And, no, nothing bad ever happened in my life to traumatize me into not believing. I suspect I never believed because my mother tells me stories about the problems she had getting me to go to Sunday school in the third grade (I don't remember the incidents).

Ask yourself this with as much honesty as you can muster - "Why don't I believe in Allah or Buddha or Krishna?" You don't really know that they don't exist do you?

Happy holidays,

It's not arrogant. It's arrogant to think that anyone who believes in god is better than the atheists. The atheists are actually free to think for themselves, whereas religion makes you believe something intangible.

The terrible event you speak of is:

The christians want EVERYONE to believe that there's a god. It won't happen if christians keep forcing their beliefs at everyone. It won't happen anyways because.. Well, once an atheist, always an atheist.

if we hated god then we wouldnt be atheists. i havent had a terrible event in my life to make me an athiest. i made a rational choice and i stand by it. it wasnt an easy choice, but in the end it was mine to make. and when you said "no one knows everything" that works backwards too. you dont know everything, so what makes you so positive there is a god?

Why would it be arrogant to not think there is a god? Not everyone that doesn't believe in god has had something terrible happen in their life.

Well, I don't believe that some invisible sky-fairy is responsible for EVERYTHING. I simply hate the concept of God,

Arrogant? Perhaps. but the scriptural evidence is that if God exists, He is a S.O.B. of the first order...

No terrible events here. I've just read the Bible. God murders people as he sees fit. Now I ask you, if you read Deuteronomy and Judges, are these the acts of a "loving" God?

I think not!

Here's something to think about... something you never hear anyone talk about in churches or synagogues...In the Old Testament, Jehovah kills a lot of people. He kills them for reasons ranging from making fun of bald people to blasphemy. In fact, he killed (according to scripture) a MILLION Ethiopians at one point (confirmed visa-vi scripture), and an estimated 6.5 MILLION more when he slew the first born Egyptians in Exodus.

Those are only two examples of the murderous nature of Jehovah. There are numerous examples in scripture of God killing off vast populations, yet the body counts are mysteriously missing. By my reckoning, if you include estimates for all of the deaths accredited to Jehovah that do not include body counts, God is responsible for some 530,000,000 deaths in the Old Testament alone, not including the deluge in which Noah allegedly put 2-7 of every animal on a boat and then killed half of them later for Gods aroma therapy....

According to scripture, God whacked the entire world population (minus 8) in that happy little morality tale.

Ironicly, Satan (the evil nemesis of God) has a confirmed Biblical body count of just 3.

Now, bear in mind that Jesus thought God was pretty cool for all the killing and smiting he did in the Old Testament. In fact, ol' J.C. thought God was so spiffy that he advocated abandoning your family to become one of Gods minions. I find it rather amusing that people will pray to God, yet those same folks cringe if someone suggests that they pray to Jefferey Dahmer or John Wayne Gacy...

For my money, anyone who believes in God is a fool for wanting anything to do with him. So, while I personally don't believe that God exists, I think anyone who DOES believe in God, and doesn't flee from his merry cult of worshippers is a twit.
