Can Japanese dvds play on my American DVD player?

I have a pretty nice panasonic DVD player thats only about 2 years old and i recently purchased a foreign DVD called Casshern. I believed the movie is Japanese but the disc didnt work on my DVD player. Im not sure if its a defective product that i did send back for another but i was wondering that the reason it didnt play was because it was a foreign DVD and didnt work in my American dvd player

there is no such thing as universal region. region 1 is north america.
the only way you will be able to watch that dvd is to buy a region free dvd player.... these are the ones you will usually find at chinese stores for cheap (brands like jwin or shinsonic). you can also watch it on your computer, this requires you to download a program that tricks the computer into thinking it is another region. right now i cant remember the name of the program. but if you look it up on yahoo im sure you can find it.

Many foreign DVDs do not work on American DVD players. If your computer has a DVD player, it should work with all DVDs.

I'm not an expert on this, but if you look on the back of the disc, there should be a region marking on it. I think region 1 is universal, but many of the others will only play on machines from certain parts of the world.

DVD players are programmed to play in zones, like america, asia, etc. you have to buy media from that region. there are hacks to open up your dvd player to play more regions, but i dont know how to do that.

I don't think they will work. I know the UK is on the PAL system, and US is on NTSC. They are slightly different. You might get software on your computer to handle this and a video card to convert to your tv set. Or you might be able to use the computer to convert. In the past, converters have been expensive.
