Why do people answer this when they know nothing about a subject.
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is the 5th most popular dog in th UK with approx 300,000 dogs here - are we all dog fighters then??
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is one of only two breeds out of the 200 breeds here to make mention of the breeds suitability with children and are the ONLY breed to have the words 'totally reliable' in the breed standard. Hardly the dog most of you are portraying on here? One of my Staffords is a Pets As Therapy dog visiting hospitals, she also does agility and obedience. They are useless guard dogs, any intruder could come in my house and take the tv and my 4 dogs would do nothing maybe not even get up other than to kiss the intruder with the normal Stafford joy of life.
With regards to your father at 70 years old you really need for him and yourself to assess his activitity levels, his house and garden size before making a decision. All these factors should be equally important. You will know doubt have breed rescues in the US as well as we do here in the UK and your Kennel Club will be able to advise you.
I work in breed rescue for the Stafford and have put several Staffords in with elderly owners, most have had Staffords before and with time matching the right dog to the owner it works well, for example an older Stafford will often slot right in. One dog I placed a couple of years ago at 9 years old lives with a gentleman of nearly 60 and his father is in his 80's from day one 'Galaxy' settled right in and goes to visit the mother/wife in a retirement home every other day all the staff and residents love him. Last week we found the right dog for a chap aged 65 with M.E he needed a very gentle calm dog, we found the right Stafford sweet girl for him aged 11 years old and all is fine.
The Stafford is a people orientated dog, it should be 110% trustworthy with people, they typically though are not good with other dogs/animal though individuals vary greatly. They are a SMALL breed and should be just 14-16" at the shoulder they have a lovely for people unseen in any other breed. They are strong for their size and generally full of life (boisterous). They are a completely seperate breed than the APBT and American Staffordshire Terrier.
I hope you find the right dog for your father, again my advice would be to research different breeds by speaking to the experts (breed clubs) and not people who do not know the breeds, anyone advising you from the breed clubs will be unbiased and tell you about their breed worts and all as they will want only the best homes for the breed concerned.
Mis information is on the internet everywhere, for your information Golden Retrievers are at the top of the 'bite' statistics both in the US and UK - but again don't judge a breed by this as some of the other replies have done, the Golden Ret has suffered to much popularity and the Bull breeds suffer bad press because of some bad owners, mis information and tabloids that only seem to report when it's a bully breed.
My website is www.cleverstaffords.co.uk
I suggest you just look for information on breeds from the American Kennel Club or United Kingdom Kennel Club lots of the 'information' sites are not very good - how can they be? No one person can know over 200 breeds so again you are just getting opinions instead of someone that knows the breed
Whatever breed you choose, I'm sure it will be one very lucky dog if only everyone would take time to research breeds there wouldn't be some many in breed rescues/pounds

this is not a breed for a 70 year old man unless he weight trains and runs a mile a day. these are very active and not good dogs in the wrong hands. in the right hands with an active owner that knows how to train and socialize the dog properly. your father needs a dog, not a puppy, you should go to your local humane society and take your grandfather and they can match him with a great dog.

Yeah for Staffy's
1st of all a staffy is for any owner willing to give lots of loving attention to. Staffys, the english type are small dogs, yet tough and will not break like a Chihuahua. (No offense to Chi's) I own a Staffy and a 69 year old Mom, who by the way is as active as a 25 year old.
Check out my 360, and my website and all my links to see some good looking Staffys!

It would definitely not be a Staffie. They are a tough, dominant animal and not predictable. You father would have to be able to train, run, be the pack leader and the dog would have to be the submissive one and not your dad. These dogs are also part of the breed called Pit Bulls. I would not give my worst enemy one of them. In case you haven't done so, research the breed and you will see the pros and cons. I am not a Pit Bull fan. Have seen first hand the damage they can do when you least expect it.
Sweet dogs become killing machines. These dogs are used for fighting and you need to check where you live to see if they are even allowed to be owned. Many cities are banning the breed due to their unpredictability.

I agree with the first answer...i dont think this kind of breed is the right breed for a 70 year old man unless he is in shape and can handle this kind of breed...i would suggest you get a dog like a lab or a small breed of dog...well hope this helps and good luck finding a good dog for your father...oh and her are my two dogs that are that breed...

Not the breed for your elderly father.
This is a very strong and very bold dog - your father would need to be a strong firm leader and a formitable match for this muscular dog.
There's a staffy that lives a few doors down that is very nice, but I worry everytime my teen daughter is near it - the dog was adopted from the pound and the owners have never taken it to any obedience training and I fear someday the dog is simply going to act or react and no one around her is going to be stronger than her to get her off of either another dog or child or adult she decided she didn't like.
Staffy's are often referred to as 'pit bulls' and unfortunately because of all the poor breeding and bad press, I simply don't trust them.
I'd rethink this breed for such an elderly person. Think companion not protection for your father.
