I am looking to buy another jeep wrangler. My last one was a 98 2.5,auto (Weak). The one I had before that was a 95 5 speed,4.0 (nice & strong). What I am asking is what is the best year you have ever owned and what made it so great?

I am currently driving my 3rd Jeep, a 2000 TJ. My wife drives a 2001 Grand Cherokee and we had a '97 Cherokee before. We both like the TJ the best. It has a 4.0l with 5spd transmission. It has plenty of power and has been very reliable. I have many typical mods and it performs quite well on the trails. The Grand Cherokee just went over 100k miles. If you have the money, the new Wranglers are real nice and have great off road performance right from the dealer.

Why don't you try something else. Ive had an 89 Grand Wagoneer and a 97 Grand Cherokee. I loved them both in different ways, the Wagoneer was 4wd with a stock rear locker and it was just unstopable offroad(until the carburated engine died). And the 97 Grand Cherokee was an great daily driver, it was only 2wd but the stock limited slip helped a lot especially with handling the V-8. Beat quite a few rice rockets around town and even messed around with a viper. I know I want my next project to be a 4wd Cherokee with an auto 4.0.
Its more up to what you want to you it for. I think one of the Rubicons might be pretty cool or something really old if you actually want to work on it. But if you need a daily driver the 93-98 Grand Cherokees with V-8s are awesome.

If you want a Wrangler, go with a manual trans. If you want an auto trans, you need to go with a '96 or newer Grand Cherokee with a V8.
I've had 'em all, and I love 'em all, but the auto trans behind the 4 cyl. is only good if you need a very large paper weight.
My current ride is a fairly stock '96 GC with a V8, which my wife and I use for everything from a grocery getter to a luxury car, to a mild off road warrior. It's not as crazy as some of the rides I've built in the past, but It's kind of nice off roading with leather interior and power seats and windows.

You basically answered this yourself!
The 2.5 4 cyl engine in automatic is horrible no matter what year it is. The 4 liter 5 speed will pull the same no matter what year it is.
You want a 6 cyl stick. Easy. The Jeep Wrangler is a great vehicle. You can put lots of miles on them if you keep them maintained. I used to drive one a long time ago as a delivery vehicle for a pizza shop. They put tons of hard miles on them and they went on for over 200,000 miles no problem.
I also own a Cherokee Sport 6 cyl.
So to answer your question get a 6 cyl stick as long as it looks well taken care of.

You are comparing two totally different machines here. Any 2.5 four banger with an auto tranny is gonna be SLOOOOW.
Any 4.0 with a 5 speed is definitely gonna be a more powerful vehicle, be it a CJ, YJ, or TJ.

I've got a 98 TJ and a 66 CJ. I prefer the CJ, but I've put a Chevy 350 in it. It depends on what I'm doing, if I'm going to say which is better. My husband just rolled his newer TJ, and the stock cage is crap. More so than the earlier TJs.

I owned a 85 Yj, five speed, 4.0 liter straight six. I put 31 inch tires and you could not kill it or get it stuck without much stupidity. Bullet proof.
