My beagle ate a bag of chocolate chips and is now throwing up. There are no vets open since it's Christmas day. What should I do?!

Give the dog a few tablespoons of Hydrogen Peroxide to make him vomit all of the chocolate left in the dog's stomach. Then you really need to call a your vet, or an emergency vet now. That large of an amount of chocolate in a beagle can cause sever illness or even death, especially if it was semisweet or bakers chocolate. Milk chocolate is not a dangerous, but you still need to call a vet. If you don't have an emergency vet in your area, call the closest one to you and at least ask for advice.

Dont' wait till Christmas is over. They can go into convulsions and never recover. Ditto on the hydrogen peroxide, If a dog has swallowed something non caustic (like something that won't do more damage going back up, such as BLEACH).. it can be given to induce vomitting. If soon enough, the chocolate is all expelled and problem solved. Even if not sure how long ago the dog ate it.. go ahead and give it and see what comes up. If the dog doesn't vomit afer a few mins..give a bit more. Make sure you're there watching as it vomits to see what comes up,how much, how digested, and so the dog doesn't eat it again. And go ahead and call an emergency vet and get their advice. Depending on the type of chocolate, it may not be such a bad reaction..or it can be severe enough to lead to death. Good luck. AND, if the dog just ate it..and immediately puked it up (hopefully all).. it'll probably be ok..but a vet needs to be contacted asap.

Vets have answering services who will call the vet that is on-call or they will refer you to an emergency vet hospital. While chocolate chips aren't the worst type of chocolate, 1/2 a bag is a lot. Find a vet that can see you now. Rule 1 of dog ownership - find out what to do in an emergency and the vet office is closed. You know what to do if you get sick and the doctor isn't in the office right?

Emergency vets are always open, even on Christmas. Usually an emergency number is available on the after hours message on your regular vet's exchange and you can also find the closest emergency vet by looking either on smartpages.com or in your phone book.

Your dog needs to see the vet. If she looses a lot of fluids she'll need them replaced by IV. Also, if the vet can induce vomiting until she's gotten most of the chocolate out of her stomach, the toxicity won't spread through her body.

Find your emergency vet and take a trip. Sorry about that.

I'm pretty sure as a rule a dog has to eat like half his body weight in chocolate for it to be toxic. I would watch him carefully and try to get him to drink. I would find a number for an emergency vet or pet hospital and call to see what they suggest.

Get the dog to the vet as soon as possible. Try to call for an on call vet. That is too much choclate for a dog. If the dog is throwing up that is a good thing, it is getting it out of it's system.

First give it a tablespoonful of hydrogen peroxide, followed by some water. It should make him throw up. keep doing this until there is no chocolate in his vomit. You really should call an emergency vet and take him there too.

Please check again in your area for an Emergency Animal Hospital. If all else fails, I would call the emergency room of the closest "people" hospital or the Poison Control Agency. The remedy for your dog may be something that would also work if a human had eaten something toxic/poisonous.

Calm down. Mine do it all the time. Nothing is wrong with them. Just too much too fast. Don't worry. Unless he does something else.
