Possibly self protection. I recently told my brother that I don't own a gun because I truly didn't think I could ever shoot someone - even an intruder in my house. He told me to get a gun anyway, and put blanks in. Said that if I leveled the gun at an intruder and squeezed the trigger, the bad guy would hear the BANG! and most likely take off running, or duck, or think twice, figuring I missed on the first shot but would NOT miss on the second or third... Seemed reasonable.

Well my brother actually uses blanks for training hunting dogs. It helps to prevent them from being gun shy and/or to be obedient even though a gun has been shot. He generally starts with a cap gun when they're pups and while they're eating. As they get use to it, he begins using his blanks. Then when he's in the field and wants to train them not to break point or in "stay" position, he fires his blanks until they learn not to bolt. I believe the biggest use for blanks that he uses however, is to imitate the sound and sight of a bird going down by using dumby traps and fake birds. So there you have it. Hope that helped.

They are used as starter pistols in track meets. and in the theater instead of guns which shot real bullets to keep a live round from accidently getting loaded in the gun.

Training. Military people play war all the time. Training would be pretty hard if people keep getting killed for real.

you wouldn't want real bullets flying around when you use a starter gun.
