You can't prevent oily skin, but you can manage it. Use only oil-free products and cleanse you face no more than 2 times a day with an oil-free/soap-free cleanser. Oil of Olay Total Effects cleanser is a great product. If you cleanse more than that you make actually be causing more oil production. Make sure you use a salicylic acid product or an alpha-hydroxy product. Use a good oil-free powder to keep the shine away & use oil-blotting tissues to mop up excess oil during the day. This will absorb excess oil without disturbing your make-up and keep you from that cakey make-up look you get from applying powder during the day. A good talc powder alternative is corn starch. I use that, it can be tinted with about a teaspoon of your regular loose powder. It doensn't look white on your face & this is for any skin color even the darkest of african american skins. Make sure you use oil-free products and don't over cleanse. Good luck. I've had oily skin all of my life. Believe it or not it's a lot easier to manage than dry skin.

If you are already using products for oily skin, that may be the problem. If you are stripping your skin of the natural lipid barrier, then your skin is producing more oil to compensate. Try using a gentle cleanser, like a liquid castile (Dr. Bronners is good), and then moisturize with 2 or 4 drops of jojoba oil (you can get this at a health food store). It is almost identical in chemical structure to your skin's natural sebum. Over-cleaning your skin with harsh detergents or products with alcohol can actually make your skin more oily, as it disrupts your skin's natural barrier function.

as simple as this sounds...keep your hands off your face (alot harder said than done). also, make sure you are washing your pillow cases about once a week and cleaning off your cell phone with alcohol pads. this helps bacteria from getting on your face and makes the oil less noticable...remember, the more you touch your face the more oil there will be. oh yea, washing your face to much will speed up the production of oil...and even though your face is oily...don't forget moisterizer for your skin type. I use the whole proative line at night!

You cannot prevent it because your skin's oil glands are directly attached to your hair follicles.
What you can do to reduce the oily appearance is use oil-absorbing wipes/pads by Clean & Clear (or another brand). They work wonders.
