There are several sources for car history
- State DMVs. Very slow to respond. They only have details on registrations and brands - when a car has major damage a brand is added. Also, they will only have data for one state - if the car has moved they can't help you. Fees vary by state.

The best source is Carfax. They collect data from over 8000 sources - and still they don't have everything. However, it's the most comprehensive source.

For free - since it costs the DMVs and Carfax - nobody provides it for free.

When dealers buy Carfax reports they pay a price that allows them to redistribute the report - so ask the dealer. You'll find thousands for free on Cars and AutoTrader. Unlike what the answer above says, a report run by a dealer CAN transfer the Carfax guarantee.

The consumer unlimited account specifically states reports can not be distributed/shared as you requested. If caught, the account holder will be charged $19.99 per report.

You can get a free vin check, a bit similar to carfax at nicb.org.
After searching for free carfax online for several days, nicb.org is the only free site I found.
Go to their site and look for the button that says VINCHECK. You enter your VIN and that's it.
It's the only free one out there but all it shows is if the vehicle is stolen or totaled.

You can only get free VIN number check by asking from forums and wait for someone
to reply and provide the VIN report for free. This option can take some time.
If you need a complete VIN check immediately, then getting a cheap VIN
number report from cheap providers is the best option.

After searching for several hours, I found a very cheap VIN check provider,
only $4.99 per report. Not bad for complete VIN check, a cheap alternative
to Carfax. Here's the site http://bit.ly/CHEAPCARFAX

The absolutely free reverse vin check sites generally provide fake information. To get real information, money will have to be paid. The free searches provide fake information so they can get your email address to send spam.

Stay away from shady reverse vin check sites, most likely you won't get any information after you make the payment. Not to mention you won't get a report and you won't get an answer if you try to call for a refund. Stick with a reputable reverse vin check site like http://www.reversevincheck.net that has been around since 1995.

I have checked the world wide web up and down the search engines and the only free thing you will get out of Vehicle History reports is a free summary report that tells you a certain amount of records listed for that specific vehicle. Also, some dealerships/car sellers offer free vehicle history reports on request if you are asking this question to do some investigative shopping (which is a great idea, by the way).

No such animal. Most dealers subcribe to CarFax and can pull a report on a vehicle that they are selling. Frankly if they won't, I refuse to do business with them.

If the dealer pulls the report, you do NOT get the buy-back guarantee from CarFax, however.

Why do people who are considering spending several thousand $$$ on a vehicle get skinflint when it comes to protecting that investment? I don't get it!

You can actually run your VIN for free but if you need to view or download the report
you, need to pay for it. Carfax is indeed expensive so I suggest you get alternatives.
You can get a $4.99 vehicle report here: http://www.vinaudit.com/coupon=Y_50OFF
