when I keep trying to fight it? I try to make myself happy like most of the books say, and it doesnt help. I try to stay with my friends and not withdraw from people, and nothing works. Any suggestions? ((Suicide has not been in my mind, FYI))

Maybe you just need a hobby (if you don't have one already) or a new one. You might just be living too much of a mainstream life and want some change.

If you have tried to do what is in the self help books and still feel depressed it means you have to see a doctor about this. You may need medication to help you and seeing a good counselor may be helpful also.

It is nothing to be ashamed about. The mind and emotions are complicated. I worked as a psych RN for many years and have had Major Depression since I became physically disabled 6 years ago.

Medications have been extremely helpful for me. I'm sorry that you are having to go through this. If you believe in God ask Him for help. He has helped me a lot, but you still need professional help.

If you fell and broke a leg, no one would criticize you and you would never think of fixing it yourself. You would just go to the doctor and get it fixed. It's the same with this. Bravo for you though, for being self responsible and trying to work this out by youeself. It's just that the time for that is over.

Don't stop doing all the things you have learned, they all sound like good things to do to be mentally healthy, it's just that you need more than that right now.

My life was miserable until I got on Zoloft. It changed my life. Some people don't do as well with antidepressants (SSRI's) like Zoloft, but I sure did.

Here's the thing... if you have a shitty life and you feel shitty, you don't have a problem. You're just normal. But if you have a great life, yet you still feel shitty, then that's a chemical imbalance. Whoever says that bullshit has never suffered from one.

Crying, because you're sad but you know you shouldn't be and that just makes you cry more. Getting hurt by the actions of people who you KNOW didn't mean to hurt you, and you shouldn't be hurt by. Those are signs that it's not just something you can fix with a book and prayers.

Try it. Good luck. Just stick with it... different SSRI's work differently with different people. It takes work, a few months of total imbalance, but it's worth it when you find the one that works.

This is coming from someone whose life was saved by anti-depressants.. and who never believed in them before.

you can read all the books you want to and have nothing but warm fuzzy thoughts in your mind but if you have a chemical imbalance in your brain you will not be able to "fight" the depression. Make an appt. with your doctor. He or she will have you take a really quick and easy written test that helps to determine what kind of feelings you are having....like with me I was always on edge, crying at the drop of a hat and sometimes sad or suicidal. This test helps the doctor to determine what the best plan of action is for you...whether it be just therapy or a combination of therapy and medication.
Good Luck

The clinical definition of "chronic depression" is that which lasts more that two weeks.

What you need to do is seek professional help. Your problem could be chemical and antidepressants may help. Sometimes it is a combination of therapy and medication. But the fact that it has lasted so long is a sign that you need outside help. It is nothing to be ashamed of. If you were suffering from headaches, and seizures what would you do? It's the same thing.

Like someone said before, it's a mainstream life, to an extent. Your mind is seeing the same thing over and over everyday, and all it knows is whatever's caused the depression. Change some things. Once you've cleaned your life up some, and changed your daily routine, then maybe your mind will see something good, and it'll naturally cause you to be happier. CHEER UP. =D

I don't know what your life is like or what the reasons your depressed are but as for me, I became depressed for 2 years and tried all kinds of meds and the only thing that worked for me was getting out of the house and being around people I didn't know and working.

Have you tried talking to your doctor about antidepressants? That may be an option you may like to look into if you find that other methods to be ineffective. Many people are afraid of taking antidepressants because of the horror stories you hear about them, but if you listen to your doctor, follow your prescription information, and report back on your progress regularly, you should feel that you are in safe hands.

Antidepressants won't fix the problems in your life, but they will put your brain on a more level playing ground to help you find the solution yourself.

You need to figure out what it is that's causing this depression. Hopefully then you can beat it. Please only go to a doctor as a last resort. I suffered depression while I was 3 months pregnant, and the doctor prescribed me Wellbutrin XL and it made me lose a dangerous amount of weight. It wasn't good for me and honestly it didn't help. I think you can fight it once you figure out whats causing it. Support groups could possibly help as well. Hope that helps and good luck!
