A dollar or two, when the mood strikes me, sometimes food.
But somebody who starts saying they have a problem and are stranded, or a crisis and need $20, $50, or whatever? No, never.
The vast majority of these people are scam artists, unfortunately - and make a living off the generous and gullible.
If somebody was really in a crisis, that would be too bad, because all the insincere ones have ruined it for them, but the fact is people asking for money from strangers usually do it as a profession.
Take panhandlers - you can tell the difference. Some of these guys are there for a couple of days, or weeks and then move on. They've already fallen on hard times. Others, however, are on the same corner, day after day, month after month, and even year after year - they don't intend for a way out; they're professional beggars. At what point does need become a way of life?

Is this a poll, or are you asking for an estimate? There are a lot of variables: the person's own circumstances and beliefs, their past experiences with strangers, with others similar to this particular stranger, etc., etc. I expect the results vary considerably from one place and time to another, and probably correlate with numerous other factors, likely in some unexpected ways.

I give money to strangers through registered charities and very small amounts (<$1) when I feel sympathetic to someone begging in the street. If it is a street musician and they are reasonably skilled, it isn't "giving money to a stranger in need"; it is paying for a valuable service -- and I thank them as well.

I always try to give a little something to someone in need, now, maybe that could be a curse because most usually I really can not afford it but I do it anyway. My therory is this," What idf that stranger was Jesus? He would want me to help, Right? So that is why I give even when I shouldn't because it is my last dollar. Is that careful enough? I speak the truth, that is all. Have a nice christmas season!! God Bless. Claire

In all honesty, it would depend upon the need and how that person got there. Giving a person money isn't going to resolve their problem if the problem is self inflicted. However, say someone recently lost a job and needed food or something, then, by all means, without question, I'd give. And if that person happen to be one heck of a scam artist, then that's between them and God. I did what I was suppose to do.

it all depends... if i see a guy on the street beggin for money drinkin a can of beer, NO... he shouldnt be waisting his money on beer if he has to beg from strangers.

maybe a disabled homeless guy?..

i really dont know. some homeless dont deserve it, just because they made bad choices, that they were in 100% control over--such as drugs or w/e.... and some may have jus grown up in a bad family and never got an education therefore cannot find a well paying job.

i would have to personallly know them, and their backgrounds before i choose who i would rather give my hard earned money to--that i worked for

if i was rich, the hell with it, i'd give everyone money ^_^

I most definately will.. and I have given money to strangers.

about 3 months ago, I had just finished work (I worked in a mall) and I was waiting for my ride, when this really haggered teeneger asked if I had any bus tickets to spare cause he really needed to get to a shelter before they closed for the night.

I started talking to him and I found out that he had been kicked out of his house and had been living for 3 days in the bus terminal by the mall.

His story made me really sad... therefore I gave him some tickets and some money to buy food ( cause he said he had been living off food from the vending machines and was really craving a salad... something fresh)

After I bid him good bye, I felt really bad for this misunderstood kid and even said a prayer for him.

It depends. If it's someone on the street, I would offer to buy a meal and give it to him but I would not hand him money so he could buy alcohol/drugs with it. My husband has offered meals several times and only once was the offer accepted. They usually want alcohol money.

I give regularly to Goodwill and to certain charities. I would not send it to someone asking here because you never know what they're actually doing with it.
