How much better? Well, the .45acp shoots a fatter, heavier bullet slower. The .40S&W was the solution to the problem that so many FBI agents couldn't handle the .10mm (like the .45acp, the frame was too large) and in the case of the .10mm, they simply couldn't handle the recoil. So the 40S&W was created to work out of a smaller .9mm frame, hold more bullets than the .45acp and be a 'gentler' recoiling handgun.

The .45acp is a great man-stopper, but a poor vehicle stopper. That is, it is not so great shooting through barriers as it is a heavier, fatter, slower bullet. This is one of the reason that Texas Highway Patrol stopped carrying the Sig 220 .45 and adopted the .357 Sig.

Crude comparison: .45acp: Like heaving a brick at your target; .40S&W: Like shooting your target with a ball-bearing from a slingshot. Both are going to 'hurt;' which is better??? The one you have on hand when you need it!

Best,

H

right
take a picture of the guy that is trying to rape or murder you....
give us a break
where do these people coe from ?

the 40 is a good round but i prefer the 45 acp full patch any day
i find that the 45 is a more accurate round and a proven man stopper
but honestly i have never tried taking a picture of an assailant before
maybe i am wrong
maybe we can all get concealed camera permits
that will teach those bad guys

The .40 to me is just a hot 9mm and they are a good cal. But I've been shooting a .45 colt Government forever now and love it stopping power is awesome matter of personal choice i guess

depends the .45 has stopping power but both can be equally good depending on the ammo used. .40 can somties be smaller but kick more, it all comes down to what you really want and how comfortable your are handeling it. I have HK-45 and a Baretta 9mm double action, the baretta is smaller on the grip but the .45 has smother action.

the .45 packs more of a punch at closer distances but the .40 is better at long distances
depends on what you plan to shoot and how far you are shooting

Ask the F.B.I., the .40 SW was their little baby. They wanted more firepower than the standard 8 rounds but they also wanted to keep some penetration/knockdown power. My personal opinion is, if ain't broke don't fix it, they all fall to hardball. 45 ACP

The 40 cal. would be your best choice. It will hold more ammo and it has plenty of knock down power. You can get a gun in either caliber that fits your hand.Remember that before you buy try holding different guns to see which fits better and has a good point and aim feature. You want something that can be pointed fast and be able to hit your target when needed.

There is no real proof of the.45acp being "better" than 40SW. This is all part of a myth created that said "bigger is better" from the Elmer Keith days. 9m/m+p(+), .357Sig, .40sw, and 45acp are ALL top notch when you use the best combat loads for each. The deabte is often fueled by people devotion to Mom, Apple Pie, and 45ACP. And I do happen to own a 1911-A1 in 45ACP. I just don't worship it over other guns/calibers.
