As I understand it (from my dermatologist), cystic acne is caused by bacteria (at least the kind I had). A few years ago I was prescribed tetracycline (a mild anti-biotic), and it cleared things up within one month.
The only side effect I had was that I got a darker and deeper tan that summer. So if you are pretty sun-sensitive, tetracycline may not be for you. However, if you want to get rid of the cystic acne AND a really good tan, you might want to talk with your physician about tetracycline.
Good Luck!

Me and my sister both have the cystic acne problem, what we both have used is Prescription creams one is duac cream and the other is tazorac, this one i use only as a spot treatment. It completely takes the acne away, I have not had the problem since I started using this in March 06. Using a moisturizer first is a must or the duac cream burns when you apply it. Its been a godsend to me.

Right now my skin is perfectly clear, for the first time in 3 years. It's been about 9 weeks and all my acne is gone. It is such a great feeling to wake up with clear skin.
