Most Christians believe that Mary remained a virgin for her entire life.
How was James, “the brother of the Lord,” (Matt. 13:55, Acts 15:13-21, 1 Cor. 15:7, Gal. 1:19) related to Jesus. All believers agree he was related, but no one knows exactly how.
The possibilities are that James was:
1. A full brother of Jesus, another Son of God born of the Blessed Virgin Mary. No one to my knowledge accepts that God had another child by the Blessed Virgin Mary.
2. A half-brother of Jesus, a younger son of Joseph and the Blessed Virgin Mary. Some Christians believe this possibility but most Christians including those who are Catholic and Eastern Orthodox believe that Mary remained a virgin for her entire life.
3. A stepbrother of Jesus, a son of Joseph and a previous wife. Many Christians believe that Joseph had a least one previous marriage that resulted in children.
4. A stepbrother of Jesus, an adopted son of Joseph and the Blessed Virgin Mary. When parents died, relatives frequently took their children in and raised them as thier own. An adopted orphaned boy would be considered the brother of Jesus.
5. A cousin of Jesus. The Aramaic language has no word for cousin. Aramaic frequently uses the word “aha,” which we translate into Greek as “adelphos” or English as brother, for cousin.
6. A comrade of Jesus. This is a remote possibility. Greek uses adelphos the same as English does in “a band of brothers.”
Possibilities 1 and 2 obviously go against Catholic beliefs.
The Catholic Church prefers possibility 5 but 3, 4 and 6 would not go against doctrine.
With love in Christ.

Mary never had other children. Yes, brothers and sisters of Jesus are mentioned, but they are never mentioned as being the children of Mary. They are either Joseph's children from a previous marriage, or cousins. See link 1.
"Firstborn son" does NOT mean there were subsequent children. God commanded the Israelites to consecrate to him all the firstborn sons (Exodus 13). The baby is redeemed on the thirty-first day of his life, so you can see it is completely unrelated to whether or not there are subsequent children. See links 2 and 3.

The word "brother" in Greek is the same word for "cousin." People say that James, Joses, Judas, Simon, and Levi were the brothers of Jesus, but Scripture specifically states that they were the sons of Mary, wife of Clopas. If Mary had other sons, Scripture does not indicate that fact.
If James were the brother of Christ, then why does Jude (Judas) call himself the "brother of James"?
If Mary had other sons, why did Jesus hand her over to John?

Three gospel writers mention Jesus' Brothers.
Mat 12:46 While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside wanting to speak to him., Mark 3:31 and Luke 8:19
James and Jude were two of his brothers who wrote books of the Bible.

The Bible says Jesus had brothers and sisters, but doesn't give an account of who they were or their names.. James is said to be brother to Jesus.. The Bible is not a history book, but is about Jesus and God and how he relates. It is never meant to be about the rest of life..

Jesus was said to have brothers an sisters in the gospels, so I'd say yes. Of course, Catholicism says that she remained a virgin her entire life.

The Catholic church says she remained a virgin. However, most Christian churches say she had other children. Two that are mentioned in the Bible are John and James. It is said that James took her to Ephesus, Turkey, to live out her life.

Read the 4 gospel accounts. Yes he had many brothers and sisters. When his father Joseph died he was the one responsible for them. That way he knew what it was like to be a father and support children. Without having any of his own.
He was always mentioning his brothers.

How became James, “the brother of the Lord,” (Matt. 13:fifty 5, Acts 15:13-21, a million Cor. 15:7, Gal. a million:19) relating to Jesus. All believers agree he became appropriate, yet no person is conscious precisely how. the possibilities are high that James became: a million. an entire brother of Jesus, yet another Son of God born of the Blessed Virgin Mary. no person to my awareness accepts that God had yet another baby via the Blessed Virgin Mary. 2. A 0.5-brother of Jesus, a youthful son of Joseph and the Blessed Virgin Mary. some Christians have faith this threat yet maximum Christians alongside with people who're Catholic and eastern Orthodox have faith that Mary remained a virgin for her total existence. 3. A stepbrother of Jesus, a son of Joseph and a prior spouse. Many Christians have faith that Joseph had a least one previous marriage that ended in infants. 4. A stepbrother of Jesus, an accompanied son of Joseph and the Blessed Virgin Mary. whilst mothers and dads died, family participants in lots of circumstances took their infants in and raised them as thier own. An accompanied orphaned boy could be considered the brother of Jesus. 5. A cousin of Jesus. The Aramaic language has no be conscious for cousin. Aramaic in lots of circumstances makes use of the be conscious “aha,” which we translate into Greek as “adelphos” or English as brother, for cousin. 6. A comrade of Jesus. this could properly be a distant threat. Greek makes use of adelphos comparable to English does in “a band of brothers.” possibilities a million and a couple of of course flow against Catholic ideals. The Catholic Church prefers threat 5 yet 3, 4 and six would not flow against doctrine. yet another element: John 19:26-27 states: whilst Jesus observed his mom and the disciple there whom he enjoyed, he pronounced to his mom, "woman, behold, your son." Then he pronounced to the disciple, "Behold, your mom." And from that hour the disciple (John) took her into his domicile. This became Jesus entrusting the Apostle John with the care of the Blessed Virgin Mary who via Jewish regulation and custom could be with out help after her basically son's dying. This threatened loss of help for Mary additionally strengthens the best judgment that Jesus' "brothers and sisters" weren't the organic infants of Mary who could have stepped in to shelter her. With love in Christ.
