Sounds like hes going through a type of separation anxiety. He misses your other dog's company, friendship and companionship. When you, his only remaining friends, leave he doesn't know how to deal with being alone. You've figured this out, by his howling. If there is any way you can spend time working with him by taking him for a good long walk before you leave, that would help him work off some of his energy and anxiety. Give him something to cuddle with, like a stuffed animal, that is all his own...an old towel for his bed, etc. Also, an old shirt of yours or your husband (whoever he is closest to) could help. It is important to NOT wash these things, as he associates comfort with the scent of who he "loves", which would now be you. He also needs his scent so he knows he "belongs" there, even though he is alone for a time. I assume he is a larger dog and prone to lots of affection. Dogs also find safety in private corners. Place a bed (old blanket, dog bed, etc.) in a corner where he feels that he can "hide" quitely and not be disturbed while you are away. Place those things that you have chosen to be "just his", in his "hidey hole". All of these things are important. DO NOT PAMPER him or give him extra treats which could reinforce bad behavior. Do things in as much of a predictable pattern as you can. Walks, his dinner, treat time at the same time each day, as this will aslo re-inforce that things aren't likely to change, and he is safe. I hope this helps you!

I am a life long pug owner myself
have had numerous pugs in my life
have three right this minute (two black females and a fawn /black masked male) and it saddens me that you've had the loss of one of your "babies"...
The one clear cut thing about ALL dogs is -- they are PACK animals and have the group mentality at play at instinct level---and-- every single member of that group is extremely important to them---you are without a doubt the alpha -- but each of the dogs within a family has their own distinct place and relationship with each of the others--- Your older dog was evidently VERY close to the one that was lost--- They will grieve for some time after a loss like this--- especially if they lost their ONLY companion that they had once you left the house---with you there-- the older dog does not feel the emptiness as much-- once you leave -- the lonliness comes crashing in on them--- they know this and this makes the older dog verbalize a dread to you of the onslaught they know is coming once you are gone and they are faced with a totally empty envoirnment !!!
You really should get another pug -- a youngster-- not a replacement by any means-- that simply doesn't happen-- but a new member to the family-- one that the older dog can show the ropes and relate with--- you will see some slight jealousy stuff at the beginning-- but you will also see the older dog begin to adjust rapidly and this grief behavior should die down really rapid after that !!
We would NEVER consider having only one dog--we have to be away quite a bit-- and our little dude and dudettes have no problem with us being away--in fact I think they think they own the place and just let US stay here !! But they have marvelous relationships with one another and ARE a family unto themselves even-------------I am very sorry for your loss and the grief that your other little one is feeling--- and I DO know pugs---they have been a true blessing in my life-- and I never intend to be without a couple -- ever !!!

Hope this helps------and-------Happy New Year !!!!!!!!!

First...don't make a big deal when you go.....it only encourages the anxiety. Just get your keys and leave. Second, give your dog a great treat that he will only get when you leave....like a Kong toy with peanut butter in it. This will keep him occupied and soon he will see you leaving as a good thing and not something to howl over. I would also consider crate training your dog for awhile. He may be feeling insecure without his companion. Sorry for your loss and good luck.

perhaps leave the radio or tv on for him. he longs for human companionship thats why he cries when you leave.or maybe have a companion for him to be with. i had a part blue heeler part pit bull a very tempermental dog. he was a great dog for kids, protection & plenty of love.

your dog is grieving! He needs plenty of attention. He will eventually grow out of this. he doesnt want to be alone. Try giving him a treat...or something he will look forward to doing while you are gone. Keep him entertained.

well mabye you should consider training him by doing this: when you go out tie him up some where where he wont see you go and then get a next door neighboor or some one to (when you are gone) untie him.
im very sorry if this doesnt work!:( mabye you should call Dr Harry Cooper!!(hehehe)

Distract your dog, get someone to come over and keep your dog company. When our old dog died, our other dog wouldn't do anything, she got better over time. Give your dog some time and distractions, it'll get better.

Leave a t.v on or get him one of the giant dog stuffed animals for him/her to snuggle with.
That might work try it....sorry if it doesn't.

Howl back, should freak him out, show him how silly he looks then he will stop :-) Go ahead and try it, animals get freaked out when you copy them, I don't know why. I like to copy my cat when she licks her paw and washed her faces, she sits there and stares at me. Kinda funny

Your dog is just sad and lonely and doesn't want you to leave. What can you do?
