Take off and landing are the most likely time their will be an emergency situation. If an in air emergency came up, generally the crew would have time to instruct you to do things like that too.

But yes, as stated to see out and assess your conditions. But also if you think of it, emergency crew can also see in to assess the inside conditions for their rescue attempt.

This is mandatory by the FAA and it permits the airplane staff to critically assess ground conditions if an emergency arises.

In case things do not go according to plan and there is no lighting inside, or huge flames outside that you would want to see when choosing an emergency exit.

FAA requirement......you need to be able to see out the window to assess the area outside in case of emergency evacuation.
