I'm pretty sure that your car is a front wheel drive, so back axles and rear gears are out of the question. A locked up emergency brake or a seized bearing sound like the most likely culprits. The emergency brake lever can be released and the brake still be engaged, if you can get safely under the car by using jackstands or possibly by wiggling far enough up underneath it to feel where the cables are you can check this out. DON'T GET UNDER THE CAR IF IT'S ON A JACK!!! If you don't feel or see any slack in the emergency brake cable it may be a seized bearing. Although a bearing should've given some warning before it gave out such as squeeling and grinding noises leading up to the seizure.

Here are some likely causes:
1) Emergency brake cable is hung up/stuck/broken.
2) Rear Brake caliper stuck (assuming you have the 4-wheel disc brake option that came with the ES and LX models) or stuck wheel cylinder (if you have rear drum brakes).
Pull the rear wheels and expose the brake assembly. See if anything moves when you try to apply the emergency brake. Engage and disengage it a few times to try to loosen things up.Then try applying the brakes normally, pumping the pedal a few times to try to work them loose. If you can't safely do this yourself, I'd recommend taking the vehicle to a brake shop where they can put the vehicle up on a lift. Most such places will diagnose the problem for free. Hope this info helped.

I had a 1996 neon and it did the same thing yours did. mine was a 5-speed. The brakes on the back locked up on 2 seperate occasions. I was only 16 at the time and my dad fixed them for me. Not to sure what he did, but he didn't have to spend any money on it, he just took the rear drums apart and fixed them.

I'd say your rear brakes are locking up,probably grease on the brake shoes,or a loose brake lining, same if the rear has disc brakes.
