First of all I tip my hat for the guy and his love that he had for the good of the bears, but do you think that he was flirting a little too much with danger, or was he at the wrong place at the wrong time?

Flirting with danger, my butt. He flirted with death, and found it.

Timothy, although he had an undoubtably good heartt, was a bit mentally unstable. He broke every rule by how he interacted with the bears on their own turf.

That it took him so long to get eaten, and that he managed to live among the bears for so long before he was killed is more a testimony to the tolerant and passive nature of most bears than it is to his skill as a naturalist and knowlege of bears.

He thought he was protecting bears. He wasn't. He was endangering them, more than anything. I remember one clip of the movie he was spying on what he claimed to be poachers. He filmed some of the men and criticized them for throwing rocks at the bear.

He needed to hit himself a few times with a clue bat. Poachers don't throw rocks at bears. They shoot them. Also, the rocks were thrown underhanded, and were clearly meant to land near the bear, not on him. The motive for tossing the rocks was to alert the bear to their presence (Surpized bears at close quarters are very dangerous.) and to try to keep it from coming any closer.

Timothy, on the other hand tried to get as close as he could to the bears, and on several occasions, touched them.

The bears didn't appreciate it at all.

But he was also in the wrong place at the wrong time. The bear that finally killed him was a problem bear that even Timothy recognized wasn't safe to be around, long before it actually killed him.

The best part of that movie was the native american that said something to the effect of ....there is a line between man and nature that should not be crossed. If you want to flirt with danger- try bunging jumping or parachuting or flying on the trapeze. He says he loved the bears but he put them in great jeapardy and they had to be destroyed as well. I believe he was selfish but I also believe that he finally found something in his life that mattered- he was just misguided in following a path of "helping" the bears. I agree that it was admirable for him loving something besides himself that much- but that does not justify the action he took which I believe was wrong.

I think he was a little off. He said his whole purpose for being there was to protect the bears but whenever people were actually harassing the bears, he just hid and did nothing. Also, his constant presence was bad for the bears. He caused them to be less afraid of people. They need to have that fear for their own good. He should have just let them be. It's a shame that he and his girlfriend were killed, but, he should not have been there in the first place.

I think what happened was probably unavoidable. If you consider the amount of time he was spending with the bears & how close he was getting to them, it's not that big of a shock that he was killed by them. He might have known a lot about them, but you can't predict or control nature.

He said his purpose for being there was to protect the bears and he didn't? That is the whole point of the documentary.. education. He was off and did do things that he shouldn't have.. but he was obviously trying to call attention to something he felt very passionate about...tons of people do the same thing every day and kill themselves trying.

Must have been, he's dead isn't he? Unfortunately he took someone with him too.
