Here's a trick someone told me that I have never tried, but I hear that it works.

Say you want to remember that the Spanish word for "duck" is "poto" (POT-o)... then to associate these words in your head, just imagine a duck with a pot on its head. So, whenever you see either of those two words (the English or the Spanish), this image will come to mind and you will have an association of the two.

I am told this is good to try, as the brain can work better in pictures than in words. It's worth a shot, I guess.

I find that the best way for me to learn words is to write them down once or twice, and then check to see if I can do this from memory. However, it all depends on what type of learner you are.

Visual: I'd recommend flashcards, or what I stated above.

Listening: Invest in a voice recorder, and speak the words, then replay them to study.

And depending on the language and words, it would also help to create the "pictures" relating to each word in your head. Good luck!

The thing with poto is that it's an exception.
Who can tell me to memorize the word bescheren(to give) in pictures, if there is no similar word for it in Romanian(my native language)?
I memorize the word as it is written ,and try to repeat it in my head along the day.Making sentences with that word is also good , but even better is to hear it spoken a few times, and it's yours.

It's actually better to learn in words in phrases or sentences. If you think about it, that's why it easier to learn words in songs and such. It's actually not good to learn translating between languages... many words don't have a direct translation, so it can mess you up.

Try to learn in phrases or sentences. That said, we also have papers of sentences (along with pictures to remind us what it says) taped up on the walls of our bathroom. People tend to spend a lot of time there. :)

Take it back to grade school and make flash cards. carry them in your pockets, post them on the dash in the car, put them on the mirror and in the fridge. If that doesn't work try writing the words 5 times in a row.
