At a family gathering for the holidays a giftcard was stolen that was a local mall gift card. I was wondering if anyone knew if i called the place it was spent if they would look on the cameras and see who it was. We know it was someone in the family and wish to find out who it was. With the holidays we we're wondering if that was even possible, and if authorities would even give it the time of day and look into it. It was for $100 and only $40 was spent. But we were talking and we didn't know if the police or mall security would even do that, if they even can. What do they do when a stolen credit card is used? Any feedback would be helpful, any at all!! Thank You!

Gift cards are like cash, untraceable.

A giftcard & a credit card are 2 entirely different subjects & one does not relate to the otherbecause a giftcard is prepaid when it reaches the user. It has no name or other identification on the card other than the actual card number which is just a transaction number of the date, time, & location the card was purchased. You will need a Police report & the Detective assigned to your case will do the investigating on this case. By the time they actually get to the store, the tapes will have already been recorded over. The place for security would have been in your home. Next year, you'll know better than to leave $100 lying around for someone to take, or possibly throw out with the wrapping paper. Even if you catch them, they're going to say they found it & had no idea that it belonged to you! The best thing to do would be to call each person who attended & ask for their help in returning the LOST card. You can't say it was stolen unless you have proof or an eyewitness who saw it happen. You are just out of luck unless the giver of that gift has the original receipt & card transaction number of the actual card. Have them go to the store with you & see if you can get some direct action without involving the Police. Families have enough problems over the Holidays & so do the Police. Good Luck.

A gift card is like cash. You do not have the same protections as you would with a credit card.

You may ask the store´s security department to watch future use of the card, then see if it was used in a location of the store that had surveillance coverage. If they agree to help, if it´s used in an area that had camera coverage, and if you get decent photos, you may find out who used it.

If you can´t get that level of cooperation from the store, basically, you are out of luck.

If it was a stolen credit card then they would do something however right on the back of most gift cards it states in English something along the lines of "Treat as you would cash not replaceable if lost or stolen"

It is criminal offense that you have written down. You can notify law enforcement and file a report for theft. If you do not want to go that route you can attempt to see if the store would help in determining who the theif was.

Walmart saves the camera info, and can go back to a certain date (POS), at a certain time, on a certain register and give the police the person who made the purchase.
