My Cat went to heaven today after a good 14 years of friendship.
I couldn't watch him suffer so I had to have him put to sleep.
Cause was heart failure from just age or cancer causing fluid in the lungs.

Now I weep and cannot stop.

Why does this have to happen on Christmas Day...?

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Oh you poor soul. I wish I could send a hug through the internet because you sure do need one. Your cat doesn't hurt anymore, but that doesn't help the hurt in your heart. I too have had to put an animal to sleep, and the feelings are just gut-wrenching.

It will get better, but right now, you need some pictures of your cat or some of its toys, a big box of kleenex, and a place where you can cry and cry until you run out of tears. Grief has to be worked through, and right now you are grieving the death of a member of your family and one of your best friends. My eyes teared up when I read your question, so I am crying with you. Bless your soul.

HeartsNMind is a special person. Listen to what s/he says. I, too, have lost pets that were companions. . .the dog with the "Hound of Baskerville" howl, the cat who would appear from the neighbor's bushes in the morning when I opened the door and called "kitty-kitty-kitty!", among other former pets.

According to the Book of Ecclesiastes, "There is a time for everything. . .'A time to be born, a time to die.'" Although your friend left on Christmas Day, stay safe with the knowledge in the future your pet went to a place where he now feels no pain.

I am so sorry for your loss. Just know that you did what was best for your friend and that you no longer have to watch him in pain. When you love something that much it is going to hurt for a long time. Remember the good things and good times and know that he is no longer suffering. It wouldn't matter what day it happened the pain would still be there. Take it one day at a time, give yourself time to heal. Then maybe you can have another pet to share the love you have with. That is the best thing you can do in your pets memory. Share the love you had with him with another. God Bless!!!

I'm so sorry for your loss, and that it had to occur on such a celebrated day. I had to put my baby boy down 9/05, and I still cry about it...and probably always will. Just try to remember all the good times you had together when you start feeling sad, that's what I do. Just know that your pet is waiting for you at the Rainbow Bridge...
Also, you can go to in-memory-of-pets.com website, typed just like that with the hyphens. It was put up by someone who had lost their beloved pet..well, you'll see.

That's too bad. My friend's mom just died a couple weeks ago. I cried for days. That kinda sucks doesn't it? Guess what? You're cat met Jesus on his birthday! When people(or animals) die, everyone on Earth gets sad, but God is happy because they get to see him! This is the best time that it could happen. Of course your cat misses you, but this is the best Christmas present that your cat can get! Your cat is probably eating gallons of the best kind of cat food that there is, and he's having so much fun, running and playing, don't worry about him. He's having a blast!

Hope you feel better! Merry Christmas!

So sorry for your loss. Even when we make the choice to let a pet go, we don't truly have a choice of *when*, if we really love that pet. Christmas or any other time, your cat needed to go, and you saw and listened and did the right thing. Your act was a gift to your cat - he doesn't hurt anymore, and I *do* believe pets are waiting for us, if there's an afterlife at all.

Take your time, mourn and grieve, don't worry now about a new pet - when the right time comes for that, you'll simply know it.

I am so sorry for your loss--you did the right thing by helping him cross the Bridge. Every Christmas, you will remember all the good moments the two of you shared. Someday, when you are ready, a purr-child will come along and win your heart and when you remember, you can share those memories with and make new memories with that new purr-child who will love you just as much. I lost my 17 year old purr child a month ago and it still hurts. It always will. It does get better, but she will always be with me in my heart and in my memories. So will yours....bless you...

I am so sorry for your loss. I lost my sweet baby girl Gracie Lou a year ago. I had her for 16 years. You made the right choice. She is with Jesus now. I have pictures of Gracie that I had framed for years before she went to be with our Lord.Sometimes I just look at her sweet little face. I have another kitty now and her name is Mia Sue ( I like people names and they also get middle names)She is very sweet she is very different than Gracie. I waited 3 months and I just had to get another bossy cat to put me in my place. I wouldn't rush to get another cat give yourself time to grieve. You will know when and if the time is right. Again I am so sorry for your loss.

I am truely sorry for your loss. I cried for 2 weeks when my beloved RatCat died. He died of heart failure too. I had been giving him medicine to help the fluids but it only kept him alive a few extra years.

Wait a while, grieve. Then get another cat. It will not be the same but it will help.
