They are both the same thing,
Straightening/relaxing are ways of chemically altering the structure of your hair so as to break the bonds that keep it curly, then reforming your hair in a straighter or less curly form. The process is very similar to having a perm (not that you would have had one if you have naturally curly hair but your friends might)!
I think for like 6-12 months or as long as you don't mind having your new growth as well as straight hair but i believe your hair becomes "more naturally relaxed as you keep doing it )
and you need to keep up with it and condition it and your best bet it to get it done at a salon and this is something you do not want to try to save money on ..older salons use the same old relaxers while newer salons are trying different less "harmful way " of treating hair so not to completely kill it
i think you are looking at 100 - 200 dollars i am being Conservative but I would rather pay for it and be sure my hair won't fall out as opposed to doing it at home to save money and have no hair in the end

It would let me better help you if i knew your nationality. Im guessing by the way you explained your hair as being poofy and frizzy your not african american. Relaxer out of the question. Go to a smart styles in Walmart and let them press your hair straight with a flat iron. You can get a wash, condition, and flatiron, for 40 bucks. their professionals so you dont have to worry about someone unexperienced messing your head up, and they will also better help you with stuff you can use on taming your texture hair.

if you have thick hair then you should use a moisterizing conditioner that will weigh your hair down. Buy a pair of thinning scissors and thin it out every week. Also, when you're at the salon, get the hair dresser to razor your hair. Then, every night when you go to bed, wear a beanie or something that will flatten your hair. i bought the garnier fructis smoothing serum and it help me alot, becasue i have poofy curly hair so after i take a shower i put that in and i let it dry in or u can blow dry it if u want.

my hair is the EXACT same way.
for me, i was tihnking about getting it relaxed because itll still be wavyish and if you want it straight, you can just straighten it!
plus if you have it permanetly straightened, you might get bored with it...
just call your favourite salon and see if they do that for you hair, and then set up a consultation with the person that does that stuff.
and then see with decision is right for you!

permanantly straight is extremely straight. i'd suggest relaxed, its also better for the hair, i think. might cost about $40, lasting a year. it depends on where you go.b
