I have wondered the exact thing myself: why are we considered less moral when we do things out of the good of our hearts instead of out of fear of eternal punishment? I don't want to stereotype here, but it does seem like people who are atheist, nontheist, or agnostic have a greater sense of philanthropy (in the broad sense) than those who feel forced by their Creator to be a good person.
As for your question regarding why it is that theists view nontheists as evil and immoral, I think it is simply how strong believers have been brought up. They were taught to have unwavering faith in God, so they find it assonite that someone else does not have this moral dilemma weighing on their shoulders. More generally, hate is fueled by fear, so perhaps they are afraid of what would happen to them if they were known to be in the presence of a nonbeliever and not convert them. Converting, as you probably know, is a very central part to Christianity, in the least, and I imagine it is quite important in many other religions as well that I simply don't know more about.
Hope this helps!

i dont believe all atheists are as you described though the ridiculing and insulting i have seen on answers give atheists a shameful reputation. I do not believe a few bad apples spoils the rest. Just as some people believe Christians are hypocrites because of their actions in public. Not all are that way. it is imperative that you set an example so others will not base judgement or assumptions.

Don't you hate it when ignorant people answer good questions? People view us as "immoral, depressed, misguided, unintelligent, and without feelings" because they don't know any better. I mean you ask any of my friends or family if I fit that description and they will tell you absolutely not. And on top of that every atheist I know happens to be quite intelligent, moral, and having very deep feelings. So again to answer your question it is because they don't know us any better so they can't find any reason to say anything else.

To hide the truth!!! Sadly whilst many Americans claim that America is a shining Christian, moral nation blessed by God they could not be more wrong. The higher rates of belief in and worship of a creator correlate with higher rates of homicide, juvenile and early adult mortality, STD infection rates, teen pregnancy and abortion!! The US is the world’s only prosperous democracy where murder rates are still high!! Rates for gonorrhoea in adolescents in the US are 300 times higher than in less devout democratic countries. America also has uniquely high adolescent and adult syphilis rates, and adolescent abortions!! All the lesser devout nations developed countries are the least dysfunctional!!! 2. Research shows that the reason humans struggle with emotion to find equitable solutions is pinpointed the region of the brain called the insular cortex, or insula, which is also the seat of emotional reactions. The fact that the brain has such a robust response to unfairness shows that sensing unfairness is a basic evolved capacity. The emotional response to unfairness pushes people from extreme inequity and drives them to be fair. This observation shows our basic impulse to be fair isn't a complicated thing that we learn. It therefore fully illustrates that all humans have morals controlled by the brain and that Christians are entirely wrong to try and claim morals as their own!!!! But Christians found a way round it!! Government statistics show that christians are vastly over represented in prisons for sexual, violent and fraudulent crime!! The Catholic church is paying millions in compensation for the sex/pedophile crimes of their priests alone!! Christians are vastly over represented in the divorce courts!! Christians invented the concept of sin and then the idea that you could sin, ask forgiveness, get pardoned and start with a clean sheet!! So no surprise that they are so expert at it is it?!!!

because as a society americans are biased against atheists i know from personal experience why do i have to look at my money and see in god we trust why when im in school do i have to say one nation under god because as much as americans deny it they are biased against not only atheists people who arent christians
as for the intelligence thing studies have shown that people of higher education and intelligence levels are most likely to be atheists again its a negativity towards atheists because we don't fit in with the norm

I am a Christian, and I have never viewed Atheist in a negative way. I was raised to be tolerant to all beliefs, so I dont condemn them to hell. If people let me believe what I choose, then I will do the same for them.
