This is a tradition that goes back probably hundreds of years to the time when after a successful harvest and good season, the poor of the lands would celebrate their good fortunes. It's just carried on down thru the centuries. The Catholic church took over the so called Pagan festivals as their own. Instead of the people celebrating the harvest, the church allowed them to celebrate Christmas. As long as the people were allowed to have some kind of feasting they didn't care who they were supposed to be praising, God or the Gods or Goddesses.

Yes, the abundance of food at the Dinner table for Christmas or any other family gathering is amazing, and I agree, not only too much, but to rich as well. I can only do what I can control, and that is myself by choosing the least caloric foods available, and eating sparingly and smaller portions. Just thinking that the next meal is but a few hour away, makes this possible for me. What you feel God guiding you to do, and following thorough with it,will be a blessing to others, and to you as well . God bless you

i agree though you should spend time with family this holiday season because it is a means for gathering and love. you can easily leave right after you all eat to prevent hearing their complaining. Or you can take the leftovers and give it to a shelter. they will greatly appreciate it. I am not sure if you are outspoken but i would surely tell them just as you explained to us about hungry families. You have a valid point.

This happens because of GREED. Some say Christmas is about the spirit of giving (NOT RECEIVING.) We live in a greedy, me first society and it is apparent every where we look. As a result people overeat, then spend the night in the ER with heart problems. But good for you for taking a stand......

If that's what you want to do than good for you. But you can't go your entire life thinking of others before yourself. Its okay to be a little selfish once in a while. Go ahead and gorge yourself with turkey, mashed potatoes, and pie this Christmas. If God is saying anything to you (and I honestly think it was a guilty conscious you heard and not a deity), he is saying "be thankful of what I give you and put it to good use".
Eat up!

I think your decision is fine, but I think it's rude to scoff at the blessings that we are given. I am fortunate to have what I do. For some reason, I have been given the life I have . I choose to celebrate that.
Rejecting it is like opening a hand made gift at Christmas telling the giver to keep it, you don't want it if she can;t make one for everyone.

I think it just stems from tradition. The food tastes good, so people just eat.
