Lots of fundamentalist leaders put alot of attention on electing leaders with their morals. Many believe that the United States should be a Christian country, reflecting Christian morals.
Basically, it's easier to pass a law than to convince a person that something is wrong. Much of the fuss is over abortion. Since the churches can't seem to educate the young to stop having sex, and since they believe abortion to be wrong, they try to enact laws preventing abortion. They don't seem to recognize that what will happen if they do is more pregnant teenagers, back alley abortions, consulting herbalists and educated witches for solutions, and lots of unwanted kids in orphanages and such growing up without parents.
This will lead to more crime, drug use, etc.
You're absolutely right... churches should teach morals. Making more laws simply makes more criminals.

Power has been a major part of religion since the dawn of time. Look at the history of Christianity, you'll see that some horrible things have been done for power. Other religions have the same problem, but information on Christianity is easily accessible.

It is not about education, in fact the church has always been about keeping the masses ignotany so that they can maintain power. The church has always been about power and control, that is why they have corrupted the teaching of Christ
