Last week I found a kitten and i brought him home. I took him to the vet and they said he was fine. This morning she threw up worms. looks like spaghitti. I can't go to the vet they are not reopening for the holidays till Jan 2. answering service says its not live threating. Please don't say go to another vet as I'm in rural newfoundland and the nearest vet is 5 hours away. I heard that giveing giving a kitten garlic powder in its food will help get rid of the worms does any one no if this is true.

Do not give the kitten garlic powder. It will not get rid of worms and can be quite toxic for the kitten (onions and garlic are in the nightshade family and definitely harmful to cats).

Since the kitten is vomiting the worms I think it calls for an emergency vet. I hope you can contact someone before next week. The vet who first saw the kitten should have given worm medication right then.

I dont know and I would not try anything like that without knowing for sure.I have a book that I would trust implicitly and it says what you have are roundworms. It does not say they are life threatening but it does not say they are not either.Round worms are treated with what is called pyrantel pamoate drug(Nemex-2) If there is a pet store closer you may be able to get some there.I don not know what else to tell you except my gut feeling is that I think the vet message may be right and although these roundworms need to be taken care of I think he will be alright for another week.I hope so.I have 3 cats myself and I live in rural area too but I am only 30 minutes either way from civilization and we have e-clinics open 24/7.I hope I helped and good luck.Keep an eye on him if he gets really bad you may need to do the long drive. But I think you will be ok till Jan 2.God Bless you for rescueing him.You did a wonderful thing!!!!!

No, don't try the garlic. It will not do anything towards getting rid of worms. Even though seeing the worms is distressing, he will make it for one week as long as he is able to eat and defecate normally. There are some deworming solutions available in pet supply stores, but kittens are very sensitive to the amount of medication they can handle, so i would suggest you wait til you can get to the vet's.

Since you are so danged far from the nearest veterinarian, contact some vets by phone or e-mail and ask for advice. Be sure to describe the worms as thoroughly as you can. You may end up having to drive ten hours, but it's for your kitten's health.

Sounds like you need a new vet (sorry). If he doesn't find vomiting worms to be an emergency, I'd reconsider his dedication to your pet's health. Anyway, try to find an emergency clinic. If you want this kitten to live, you need to have him seen about. Old Cat Lady is right, garlic (and onions) are toxic. Good luck!

go to a pet store or a supermarket with a pet section. grab a bottle of dewormer - one that says it kills ascaris worms. give to kitty in the meantime. These pet store dewormers are not very strong and do not do the job real good... but they do kill some of the worms. then when the vet is open, take kitty for a proper deworming.
