Hillbilly is a term referring to people who dwell in remote, rural, mountainous areas. In particular the term refers to residents of Appalachia and later the Ozarks in the United States. Usage of the term "Hillbilly" generally differs from other terms referring to rural people in the United States in that it can be used for mountain dwelling people anywhere but is generally not used to refer to rural people in non-mountainous areas. Further, terms like redneck and cracker, often connote rejection of, or resistance to assimilation into the dominant culture, while hillbillies theoretically are merely isolated from the dominant culture. Nevertheless, the term is sometimes considered derogatory depending on the context in which it is used or the attitude of the target.

It's hill billy ... and it is basically someone from a very rural part of the USA -- typically not much education, stereotypically they do not have much money, but it's more a description than an actual person or people. THere used to be a television show many years ago that was a comedy about hill billys who moved to Beverly Hills, CA after striking oil in their backyard.

But in all it is a term put on most mountain people that live so far back in the sticks they don't come out but to get monthly supplies. They have their own little world back in them thar hills. You better believe ifin you mess with em you is in trouble. Watch the movie Deliverance. Or Cole Miners Daughter. All of us aren't like that. I'm proud of my mountain heritage.

Ignorant or rude people assign thei name to people of "lesser education or position" who live in the country or in the mountains. People who are snobs call people from Appalachia "hillbillies" because of these things and their manner of speech. Most don't realize or understand what wonderful people mountain people are. I came from these people and am proud of them. The local idioms contain many original expressions of Elizabethan English and many of our traditions come from the Scots, Irish, English, German, Welsh, and French people who migrated here in the late 17th and over the 18th century. Mixing these cultures with our native American ancestors and our African brothers and sisters made a beautiful mixture of people. Rural locations and isolation from the north and coastal regions kept the simple lifestyle in tact, thank God.

Correctly it is "hillbilly". It means a person from the Appalachian Mountains of the Eastern and Southern US, usually considered, wrongly or rightly, to be ill-educated and ill-clothed, crude in demeanor, and using poor grammar and language.

Basicly somebody who lives in the Eastern mountain areas of the USA. It is a derogatory term. It is associated with cultural isolation, backwardness, lower education, inbreeding and stuff like that. Related terms are Crackers, Hicks, Rednecks etc.
