Once `Umar entered Muhammad's house and noticed the state of the furnishings in it. Muhammad himself had only one sheet of cloth round him to cover the lower part of his body. There was one simple bed with one pillow filled with nut fiber. On one side of the room was some barley and in one corner near his feet was an animal skin. There were some water-skins hanging beside his bed. `Umar said that on seeing this tears came into his eyes. Allah's Messenger asked the reason for his tears. He replied, "O Allah's Messenger! Why shouldn't I cry! The strings of the bed have left marks on your body. This is a small room with all your furniture, I can see what there is. The Byzantine Emperor and the Persian Emperor enjoy luxurious living while you, the Messenger of Allah and the Chosen One, live like this." He said, "Ibn al-Khattab! Don't you like that they choose this world and we choose the Hereafter?"

The Prophet lived a life of poverty, if he was lying he must know he would go to hell for lying against God, why didnt he get as much as he could in this life before dying?

The point is that he could have lived like a King if he wanted to. He had the option, homeless people do not have that option

For most of the sixty-three years of his life, Muhammad was a merchant, then a religious leader. He took up the sword late in his life. He was an active military leader for ten years

He married 11 or 13 women depending upon the differing accounts of who his wives were. At the age of 25, Muhammad married Khadijah which lasted for 25 years.[68] This marriage is described as "long" and "happy," and he relied upon Khadija in many ways.[69][70] After her death, friends of Muhammad advised him to marry again, but he was reluctant to do so.[71][72] It was suggested to Muhammad by Khawla bint Hakim, that he should marry Sawda bint Zama, a Muslim widow, or Aisha. 'Muhammad is said to have asked her to arrange for him to marry both. Later, Muhammad married more wives mostly due to social and political motives, to make for a total of eleven, of whom nine or ten survived him.[68]

He had a very nice social life I would say
Money and influence

First of all, I must say that I am annoyed when I see people answer questions like this with anti-Islamic garbage. Please try to keep an open mind. If anyone were to investigate Islam seriously, they would find that it is a good religion that teaches virtues and positive behaviour, not violence or hatred. Christianity too, despite the violence and bloodshed against "infidels" in the Middle Ages, is also a fundamentally good religion.

The Prophet Muhammad lived a good life and this is even acknowledged by non-Christians, even in the 18th century. Sale even quotes from anti-Islamic scholars who nevertheless praise Muhammad's qualities.

Jesus taught that "Ye shall know them by their fruits". He taught that a false prophet would produce bad fruits. Muhammad only produced good fruits and by any Biblical definition, was and is a true Prophet of God. I hope that you will open minded and investigate the Qur'an and the true nature of Islam.

I hope the previous answerer to this question who insulted Islam will have an open mind in the future and realize the terrible error of blind prejudice.

He had the money to live like a king and yet he gave it all away to help the poor. He was not poor as some of you are saying, but did not spend anything in luxury. I'm so glad you brought this up because it shows the goodness in his heart that made him think of others before himself. He is the example of generosity, fairness, and unselfishness.

Muhammad (pbuh) had more than one wife yes, but most were widows and did not have homes. That was another time, and I completely respect him for giving those women homes. The same hardly applies to society today because many women work and make money for themselves (in the US). For all who criticise the fact that Muhammad (pbuh) had more than one wife, what is it that you would recommend those women who had no homes and no money to do? Why do you think he would marry widows and not all virgins when he could? Stop trying to look at him through the perspective of someone living in the US in the 21st century and compare him to others in his own time period. He was actually a social reformer in his time .

well we could also say the same of ghandi , is that not so i think it doesnt matter if someone claims he was lying if in his heart he knew the truth then why worry. all these prophets lived life in proverty well all these homeless and starving people could claim the same i think its how a person looks at things and interperts things or precieves life around them and in all relms it just comes down to this what do you believe and if thats it then what does it matter be happy and content in your beliefs and let others go on their way.

Muhammad was very rich but he gave all of his money to the needy and to do what he believed was God's work (and lived in poverty). This proves Muhammad truly believed what he said his revelations where. Whether one believes in it or not does not make Muhammad himself a liar. His dedication and selflessness show he belived it was true, which is what would make him a lair or not.

Who thinks he was a liar? There have been many Prophets of God. If they were to lie, God would take them out. They still have to keep the commandments...just because they are Prophets doesn't give them the go-ahead to sin.

Man, study your religion well!!. Muhammad married 9 women at once, without his first wife, Muhammad did not work after that, he became leader, he had land of Fedek, he had slaves, he had fifth of anything gained in the war. this is in the quran, read it well!
He was rich king to the extent of that time, he did not become extremely rich, because he died before that.

He was like a king, he ordered killing of poet, like the jewish poet who made poem about muslim women, he ordered killing of Ka'ab bin Zuhair (famout poet), but that poet survived after he declared he became muslim and asked forgiveness!!

Muhammad thrown out jews tribes like kind of things Saddam would do by throwing out some kurds!! Muhammad took several of his wives on preference of other muslims, like the jewish leader daughter, like his adopted son wife, Zainab. and he had God to order the marriage.

Of course, since anyone who's in poverty chooses to be that way, just like I live like a King because I chose that. Everyone simply chooses how much money they will make and how big their houses will be.
Choke on my sarcasm.

I guess he was too busy spending his money on his war, his slaves, and all of his wives.

He used varoius local religious views to create a new combination religion, this is easily seen by looking at what version of Christianity is included which was the version that the cults in that area practiced. And of course the version that one of his wives practiced that he captured during one of thier wars.
