My son will be 5 in about 2 weeks. He pees in the toilet with no problem. When it comes time to have a bowel movement he cries and cries and says he can't do it. If it were not for this problem he would be potty trained. He wears his underwear everyday and when he goes out. Then at night I end up putting a pull up on him to go. Any suggestions???

If hard stools don't turn out to be the problem you could try this. Put a pull up on him and put him in the bathroom to poop. Repeat for two or three days untill he is comfortable to go in the bathroom with pullup on. Next put pull up on and go to bathroom but sit on toilet (with pull up on)do this untill he is comfortable next make special pull ups with hole in bottom. Put on toilet continue until he is comfortable finally start to pull down pull up. Some children are also very afraid of pooping in toilet b/c they feel like they are losing part of themseles and then flushing it away. Be patient and good luck

you might want to ask a doc about some stool softener or like movies or books about it for kids so he knows its ok. some kids are affraid to go poop in the potty even if the are fine peeing in it. You could also do what I did with my daughter put him on the potty tell him he needs to go poop and then just walk about before he can protest. Give him a few minutes go back in ask if he went if he says no or I cant then say well try anyways and walk back out before protest

Celebrate every time he poops in the toilet, bribery goes a long way. Buy a new toy he really wants and put it high up in the bathroom where he can't reach it. Tell him when he goes poop in the toilet, he can have the toy. Eventually he'll get over his fear, and use it on his own without a toy.

I would try bribing him with something that he likes such as candy or making a game out of it. I have a 4 year old and he had a hard time taking time out of his very busy day :) to go poop. I took him to the dr and she said to try bribing him and if that doesn't work that I could give him Ducloase(so?) and that would soften his poop so he could actually go. I really did not want to give him a laxative so I tried prune juice every day... and that did the trick. Hope it helps. :)

Does he still like Elmo? The Elmo potty movie is great, and it discusses bowel movements (poo-poo).

Poor little fella probably has hard stools. Take him to the doctor and find out what is a safe softener.

maybe he's afraid of pooping in the toilet, or maybe he doesn't want anyone around or to know when he's using the toilet for that reason...you could try making it into a game and rewarding him with treats or games or something.

He needs more fiber. If that doesn't work take him to the doctor to get better suggestions.
