It depends upon her health and how overweight she is. When it comes to individual coverage, Insurance companies decide who to cover and how high their premiums should be based upon the financial risk to their company.

Group coverage, such as most employer sponsored insurance charges everyone in the group at set rates because the overall risk is lower. The insurance Company assumes that a High risk policy holder (who's medical costs will be higher) will be balanced out by one or more low risk policy holder (who's medical costs are likely to be lower).

Right or wrong? Hmmmmm. Insurance companies like any other business need to show a profit at the end of the day. To accomplish this, they must weigh (no pun intended) their risks. They've created complex systems articulating probable afflictions based on everything from where a person lives, smoking habits, and yes weight. Utilizing their right to decline applicants based on too high a risk helps them keep their bottom line green and stay in business. Taking a broader view, the states then create programs for the uninsurable, which everyone contributes towards with our tax dollars. Sometimes hospitals and doctors waive fees. Even then, for those businesses to turn a profit they simply adjust prices across the board so paying customers share the cost of those "losses" in the long run. When you think about it, it's really a shell game where everybody shuffles for position. And we all pitch in to cover each other in the end. Best wishes to your mom.

Insurance companies have height/weight guidelines and you can be turned down for coverage unless you are in a "guarantee issue" state. However, your state will have a high risk pool insurance plan that she can take out and cannot be declined. She also could get on a group plan if she is employed by a company that offers medical insurance. You can call your insurance commissioner's office to get the number for the high risk pool.

is it wrong? I don't know.....is it mean? yeah! But working in the medical field.....hospitals charge un GODLY amounts of money for stuff......and unfortunately overweight people have a lot more health problems than normal weight people. It's the same as insuring smokers....they are more of a risk. Knees sometimes need to be replaced due to all the extra weight on them....and shelling out $40,000 a knee due to that problem is not something they really want to do! Not trying to be crude, just honest.

Yes it's wrong, but unfortunately the insurance industry is really rough right now. They are VERY particular about who they insure and what they pay. If they have weight guidelines, perhaps your mom can lose a little and fit into the guidelines, get the insurance and then she'll be OK.

Good luck.

Morally and ethically maybe, but not from a business point of view. Keep looking though. There are probably very few people who are entirely uninsurable and it's usually people with some sort of high risk job like trapeze artist or bomb squad technician. ;)

You could try offering to pay more for a deductable or more per month/year and see if they'll go for it. Provided she can afford it that is.

Well, that's not true. I"m sure she can find LOTS Of companies to cover her, but they won't cover THINGS ALREADY WRONG WITH HER. It's NOT wrong.

Insurance is exchanging a POSSIBLE loss for a fixed premium. So known losses are usually excluded.

As a test case, just try buying a car insurance policy to cover you AFTER the accident.

Whether it's wrong or not is a matter of opinion. I understand why some insurance companies feel this way, though.
