I just adopted a 4 year old dog who acted like he did not know his name well and we changed it. He comes to the new name better than his own.

Dogs don't really have names as we conceive of them. Rover doesn't here his name and think "that's me!" They don't welcome another dog and identify themselves, in dog, as Rover. What they think is something along the lines of "when I hear that sound "Rover" something is coming." Could be food, a pat, running to my master, a command. But I'm (hopefully) going to pay attention.

You can introduce a new name the same way you did an old. Do something to get the dog's attention. Give a treat or praise along with the new "name." Repeat often until they get the idea this new sound is something I should pay attention for.

Dogs can and do learn new names. If the name you got him with doesn't suit him/her, go ahead and change it. Just remember to use it a lot so that they associate it with themselves.
I have 4 dogs and have been through your dilemma. We came through just fine.

Yes you can, they will get use to their new name and respond to it very soon.
