My best male friend, who I have had a crush on for awhile, told me in a conversation that his new girlfriend already told him what kind of engagement ring she wanted, then he responded to me that he was just kidding, haha and was no where near that point. Why would he say that to me? To get a reaction out of me? Do you think he knows that I am crushing on him?

That's to vague to put anything on---he could have been thinking about her and getting her an engagement ring and wanted to discuss it with you and then just changed his mind.
You kind of need to look for a few more signs--good luck.

no, and I don't think this has anything to do about his knowledge of your crush on him. like you said, he does have a new girlfriend, but girls have this tendency to dream about getting engaged and having this beautiful engagement ring. she just wanted to make conversation. even if he was joking about the whole thing, the point is he started this relationship and he's not likely to propose to his girlfriend within the first months of dating. perhaps he's the joking type, and he sees you more as a friend. perhaps find someone who will see you as more than a friend.

The conversation is way too vague. It doesn't seem very funny to me so I don't know why he would make the comment. The "Harry Met Sally" rule is still in effect. Guys typically have thought of hooking up with their "girl" friends. Even the ugly, fat ones ... usually its on some drunk lonely night but they do indeed think about it ...

No he was just telling you like a male buddy that his girl wanted to get engage not to see your reaction it seems to me that he will only see you as friend so why not date other guys that will like you back

He just probably wants to get some hummer into the conversation. He might know that you like him and he just trying to get you to relax....the trick did not work obviously. Just tell him that it was not funny and then talk about something else.
