Well, yes, and no.

Your home license is considered valid by most foreign countries for a short period of time, so you don't have to get a license in that country if you're just visiting and rent a car. But you SHOULD get an Internation Driver's Permit, which you can get through the AAA, which really is just a translation of your home license.

No, it is not. However it is valid in most counrties.

Some countries state that an International Driver's Permit (IDP) is required for foreign drivers. Italy and Spain are two examples. However, I have rented cars in both Italy and Spain with my US license and they never asked to see an IDP. I travel extensively and drive in many countries. Although I do carry an IDP, I have NEVER been asked for one.

Contrary to what most people think, an IDP is NOT a license to drive. It ONLY serves as a translation of your license into several major languages. It is only valid when accompanied by your valid national license and it is NEVER valid in the country where it is issued.

No. A US drivers liscence is only valid in the US (and possibly a short term in other countries).

An internal driver's liscence is usually valid for a year and can be used in many different countries.

I believe you can drive in another country for a short time.

For e.g in Australia, I believe it's 3 months after which time you need to obtain a Australian drivers licence to continue driving legally here.
