AVi files are a video file, there are different ones using different codecs and sometimes windows media player can't handle them.

VLC is a good free media player that seems to handle almost anything. You can also get codec packs which install a selection of codecs for various formats. I use XP codec pack that can be downloaded from free-codecs.com

Its an audio/video file. You just need this codec pack (installs the most commonly used codecs) http://jdoe.host.sk/coda_v33.exe
Its the Coda codec pack. After installing this, use Windows Media Player. You should also get the VLC player http://www.videolan.org/mirror.php?file=vlc/0.8.6/win32/vlc-0.8.6-win32.exe . This will play nearly all audio and/or video file in almost any condition.

You should be able to view it with Media Player. Just right click on the file and choose open with. Then click on Media Player. That should do it. If it does, you can easily assign all avi files to open with Media Player. Just right click on the file, click on open with, click on Media Player and then click on the button that says, "always open with this program".
