nWell, I have an idea. My Mom taught me how to soften BROWN sugar...once it was hard as a "brick" and it TRULY DOES work for hard brown sugar......so why not try it on WHITE sugar. Just cut a wedge or two from an APPLE and put it in the bag of white sugar (or in a canister with the brick of white sugar and seal it tightly!!) Don't let any air get in! Forget about it and in a few weeks (maybe sooner) the sugar will be SOFT...and the wedges of apple...will have shriveled up and kind of dried up.

I don't know if this would work for white sugar, but putting a hardened chunk of brown sugar into a sealed back or container with a slice of fresh white bread, and letting it sit for a day, works perfectly.

Your kids can eat pure sugar (*shudder*)? Try putting the suger in a canister with bread, the sugar hardens because of exposure to humidity. The bread absorbs the liquid from the sugar making it a hard but easy to crumble block. Ive never tried it with white sugar but it works for brown sugar.

Try putting a piece of bread in a container with the sugar and close the lid. Leave overnight or for a few days.

Put the chunk of sugar in the microwave for about 15 seconds. That should loosen it up sufficiently to use.

For five pounds of sugar, you will need several slices of fresh, soft bread. The hardened sugar absorbs the moisture from the bread. You will have to feed the now hardened bread to the birds, but they are hungry now too.
