I was a little low on cash one week and took my neighbor up on the suggestion to go to the local food pantry. All I ended up with is endless cans of outdated bent cans and dusty boxes. I got no meat or fresh vegetables. When I arrived home, I called my neighbor to tell of the experience. She told me that most times the church and/or its members keep the meat and vegetables for themselves. That's so strange, seeing as though the local food depository issues the food to the local churches for distribution to the hungry and poor.

The question is this: should I be grateful for the outdated food or should I be grateful and count my blessings?

That sounds about right. I think you should call a news crew to do some investigative reporting. And for the churches that are doing that.....shame on them....I hope this serves as an embarrassment to them.

What a sad experience. I attend a church that has a food pantry. We provide for church members, but only on the same basis as the public also. If there are meat/vegs for church members, then there is food for the general public. I would be grateful for anything, but also a little puzzled at the church's practices unless it is in a really low area.

My church has a program and food gets delivered to people. There is liability in distributing goods not in a can with specific expiry dates so some churches don't do it anymore. Be grateful for anything you get given because this world is sadly getting colder by the day and one day legal reasons will stop us all helping anyone at all the way we are going...

that seems strange. We usually donate canned food to our food bank but never outdated food. It could be that older people are donating not realizing that it is out dated. Usually churches don't keep fresh veggies or meat beacuase they don't have a ton of space to store it. They'd have to put it somewhere if there was to be a wedding or event,

I frequently pick up food from food banks for my patients who don't have food or money. Normally the food pantry doesn't have perishable items like meat or fresh vegetables or fruit.
I'm sure there is theft in that just like everything else. Just a shame.

Your screen name tells me why you were "a little low on cash"
and you are judging church workers by what someone else said (backbiting) about them? shame on you. Try being grateful you ate. There are people in the world who would love just ONE bent and dusty outdated can!

You can try and hold a contest in the school to see which class can collect the most unparishable foods... you can also host an event where the admission fee is a food donation.

Benny is right. Call a news crew.
What you'll find is this is NOT happening.

Our pantry rotates stock continously and, more often than not, has fresh produce straight from the growers - fresher than you can get in the store.

be grateful and count your blessings, even if some church workers took food meant for the poor, they will be made to account for that on judgement day.

.
p.s. next month, buy food before you drink up all your money
(judging from your nick)
