Ask him if you could do lunch or coffee.
If you need a reason, just make up some item of mutual interest (ideally something that strokes his ego) to discuss over lunch of coffee. That's appropriate if you don't know him well enough to ask him out without a reason to.
Wear something a little provocative and flirt a little, and he'll get the idea if he doesn't already notice you.

Ask him!
When it is possible to meet him in a comfortable setting, if you already know him just start a nice simple conversation. If he's actaully responding back, make like you have to go but that you'd really like to carry this conversation on later.
Suggest a nice coffee shop or a good pub (if that's what you like) and say, "I really have to go now, but why don't we continue this conversation at (Insert name of establishment here) at say, 6:00pm tonight?"
That should start the ball rolling.

Find out what music he likes, then take him out. That way you just dance with him and you don't have to talk with him until after the show and you both are a little looser. That way you don't feel so awkward when you both start to talk. He's an educated man, but he's a man all the same.

First of all, don't be so insecure. In a conversation invite him to a classic or a auto show or something that sparks his interest. Be coy. Find out what his interests are and expound on them
