My son mumbles so much, nobody can understand him. It's a shame because he's not a miserable teenager, just a self conscious one I suppose. Please tell me if your son was like this, but grew out of it?

Oh yes my son is a terrible mumbler now he's 14.( i couldn'shut him up when he was little) . I think he feels self conscious.
He also tend to slouch around looking at the ground and I think this is for the same reason.
People all tell me he will grow out of it and my gut feeling is that they will.
Unfortunatly his Dad still mumbles and then blames my ears when I can hear what he says.So perhaps theres no hope for me!!

My brother was the same. So self- or teen culture-conscious that he seemed like he couldn't be bothered answering a question, or giving his opinion. I think, in reality, teen minds are usually too busy buzzing with thoughts related to their peers (dating?) or fitting in with their peers. And when they're not buzzing, they're tired and numb. It's hard being a teen.

Time's the best healer here, but you have to make sure he doesn't fall into a drink-and-drugs trap.

I wouldn't try and fit in with him too much, to try and help him. Suddenly taking an interest in his favourite sports teams/bands will look forced; and if he doesn't want to discuss dinner, he probably won't want to discuss them (especially not the basic, unchallenging questions you'd ask). This wouldn't solve the problems in his life - his overloaded, misfiring teenage brain and stressful life (most teens seem stressed and depressed, a lot of the time). His sleeping 9 hours+ a night isn't a bad thing btw (studies suggest it's necessary for teenage brains).

I'm not a parent so, uhhh, good luck! Let me know how things go :-D

Yes he was - then one day i called him Kevin. When he asked me why i had called him that I said he was just like the character on the TV - the next time kevin came on i said ' do you see what mean. Instant improvement (Not 100% but about 50% and my life became a lot better)

Oh it winds me up, it's like a ventriliquist living in the house!
He has no concept of hygiene and i nag him every day
His hair is a mess
He is spotty and i buy lotions and creams to try and help does he use them? NO!
His room stinks of EAU DE BOY!
I just wish he would help himself and be more conscious of his surroundings, i really do feel like i am nagging 24/7, but it must better for me to do than one of his mates to say he smells!

I too mumble, I always blamed the Braces, for altering my mouth.

However, Davi beckham too had a speech problem, he went to a voice therapist and they trained him to alter his voice. Why not consider that?

My cousin is the same. my personal view is that his dad used to do it a lot and i think he just copied him. hes getting better now, hes 16 and i can now get more than a "yes" or a "no" out of him, just be patient!
