you have to change the gear on the end of the cable to match the rear end :)

You need to know what transmission you have and the rear end gears. Steeda has an excellent page that you can check and see which speedo gear you need.
While you're under there, depending on the mileage you should check, drain and replace the transmission fluid if necessary. Manuals are easy. Automatics I always have serviced.

Late model, re-calibrate the speedometer, old mustang, change the no. of teeth in the speedometer gear at the transmission

Find out what gear ratio he put in ,then go to the Ford parts and see if they have the correct gear to replace the one where the cable connects to the transmission.

the cable housing is probly in a bind under the car /inthe trans at the cables end inthe trans is a plastic gear on the end remove the Yclip at trans pull cyl out and theres your part .

check with ford parts to see if they offer different size gears for the speedo drive in the back of the transmission near the driveshaft.

you can remove dash panel and open it from the back. you can go to dealer for odometer replacement or go to salvage yard and just replace dash panel ($65) and 4 screws to remove
