We have a four year old beagle and have had since he was a puppy. He has been extremely good with people and we have never had a problem with him people wise. However, the past year or so he has started to growl at my brother who is 19 now. Just recently he will go after him for no apparent reason. For example if he walks through the front door he will go after him and try to bite him. Does anyone know why this is happening? My brother hasnt provoked this behavior and we dont know what else to do. My brother is the only person he does this too. He is very sweet with everyone else. How can we correct this? What can we do? I dont want to get rid of him. I am at my wits end beacuse he seems to be getting more violent towards my brother. My brother just the other day had to swart him off with a pole so he wouldnt bite hime. Why is my beagle so violent and defensive towards him all of a sudden?? Please help!!

I should also say that my brother lives with me so my dog knows him. They used to get along very well.

You've said that your brother and the dog have known each other for a long time, that (at least) the 3 of you are in the same household...
My guess is that something has happened to cause your dog to not trust your brother- It doesn't necesarily have to be that your brother has acted agressively TOWARD the dog. Has Snoopy witnessed your bro being agressive (even in pretending) toward another individual? His girlfriend? a buddy? another animal? Has something happened in your brother's life that makes him appear different to the dog's perception (shaved his head, taken up smoking or drinking)?
Do some investigating- ask questions, find out if there's anything new or different.
My husband and I don't smoke or drink... She was normally very friendly, kind, playful, etc with everyone. Once she observed a man (who smoked) get angry and loud with his girlfriend's kids. My dog never liked smokers again- she'd get upset, barking, growling, hackles raising, etc. At the same time, we had a landlord that would come over unanounced and very intoxicated, or at least I could smell the alcohol from across the room! I think my dog sensed my negative emotions (anger and fear) and felt it was related to the smell of alcohol... yeah, she'd get a little out of hand when she smelt alcohol on someone, too.
Back to your problem... Snoopy and our brother have been buds for 4 years, and suddenly Snoopy doesn't trust/like him... Is your brother home a lot or is he out of the house most of the time? If he's home a lot, there may be a way to re-gain Snoopy's trust. Have your brother take over the dog's care- all of it!! Feeding, water, walking, bath-time, grooming, etc. Your brother may not like this option, but your dog will have to re-learn to trust him.
Start with your brother coming home with a toy or treat- use it as a diversion, so the dog is focused on the new item instead of ripping your brother's kneecaps off. Make sure he stops using the pole as defense- smacking the dog (however gently still tells the dog that your brother is not to be trusted!) Use this tactic for about a week or so, see if it helps. I've heard that Beagles are pretty hard to train (I think the term used was "hard-headed"), so it may take a little longer, but hopefully, the dog will begin to associate something fun with the appearance of your brother.
Good luck!

Mayb ur dog doesnt like him because ur brother did something to him jus because u dont think he's done anything to ur dog doesnt mean he hasn't....He could have kicked him or something while u were out of the room. U've had the dog since he was a puppy so he knows ur brother is part of the family so he wouldnt think he is a threat to u. So mayb ur brother hit him or bothers him when ur not around....A dog doesnt jus start attacking someone for no reason....

The beagle may feel threatened by the prescence of another young male. He may feel that he is in a competition for your affections. If I were you, I would find your beagle a special lady friend.

Call the non-emergency number for the police. I don't think this is a 9-1-1 sort of thing, but the police will still react to your call and go check it out.

The dog is just defending you the master. Do what ceasar milan does, any misbehavior tug on the leash so he knows that is bad.
