Maybe it bothers him that he didn't or couldn't do those things for you when you were a kid. That may just be his way of dealing with his regrets.

You're father isn't wrong here, and neither are you. Our parents, especially after WE have children, have a tendancy to be protective. They want what's best for us emotionally and financially. This could just be his "opinion", and wasn't meant to hurt you in any way. He was probably brought up where there was very little, and money had to be spent on useful things, and sparingly. He just doesn't understand why you would spend the money on those cars, rather than on a new coat or something. What it boils down to is that you both have different opinions. You are a parent, and what you say or do for your kids is done with their well being and happiness in mind. Don't let your dad's comment bother you, it's just the way he thinks, and is just that an "opinion". Be happy with your kids, and enjoy the smiles you gave them, which will last them a life-time. They will always remember that special gift from you. Don't let this drive a wedge between you and your Dad.

Your father must be on a different page from you. There are other important things in life than a battery car but on this christmas day any present you decide to buy your kids is totally valid and so is...his opinion; however, don't let a simple comment put a cloud over you, it'll pass. If it helps ask him what he meant by that and see a commonn ground where you both agree. At least, your kids had fun and they liked it.
