You do have to have a license to form a non-profit organization. Your local tax office will be able to help you with obtaining 5013c form which is what kind of licensing you'll need. They aren't the cheapest thing and they do have to be renewed.

I don't think you *have* to have a 501c3 number to be non-profit, but it will make you tax exempt and make you legitimate for people wanting to donate. My mom did it starting up a missionary group. She had to go through a lawyer and write out all the organizations policies (how to kick out a member, who has access to money etc.) The organization is required to have 5 people on the board of directors. You can't start an organization on your own, and it is a lot of work. I think she paid somewhere between $100 and $300 for the start-up.

Contact your local Tax Office for a Not-for-Profit license.

Someone replied that people on the board don't get paid. While this may generally be the case, it doesn't have to be that way. In fact, in Southern California, the top guy makes a salary of over $300,000/ year. It seems a bit high for me, for a non profit job, but that's what it is. So you don't have to be poor to run a non profit.

Filling out the IRS form 501(c)(3) is a lot of work. Rather than start your own nonprofit, where you have to do bookkeeping an have a board of directors and all those things, why don't you find an organization that's doing similiar work and join them? Or, find a church or something to sponsor you and they will take the donations (making them tax-deductible), and then give them to you. They will take a small fee for bookkeeping, perhaps 1-10%, but you won't have to do all the work to set up your own nonprofit.

You have to register it as a not-for-profit or they will tax you capital gains tax.
