I just got a Tippmann 98 custom paintball gun for christmas. I went out to shoot and it works fine. But when I try to unscrew the co2 tank air starts to come out of it. is that normal? do I just need to take it off all the way? I usually just tighten back when air starts coming out of it, not wanting to lose too much co2. so what should I do? I havn't tried taking it all the way off.

ps: I'm new to paintball

EDIT: When I start to take it off there's a lot of co2 coming out. I knew a little was supposed to come out but this is so much it frosts around it

Leave it on, if you don't have a valve to shut it off,
it'll empty as soon as you take the tank off.
Just shoot it till it's empty, then take it off.

hey dude, dont worry i had the same problem when i first started and it is just normal. when u unscrew the tank co2 will alwats leak when unscrewing and begins to come out start dry firing (shooting with no paint) and the leak would stop. the and only thing i suggest is not to stop unscrewing the tank cause the co2 couldfreeze the internals of the marker and that is not good, so just unscrew the tank quick and always make sure the plug is in, ive been paintballing for 5 years and play safely, have fun.

When you unscrew the tank there will be some CO2 that will leak out the best thing to do is just unscrew it quickly

Also sometimes after taking off the tank and putting it back on alot will cause the o-ring on the tank to crack so if you hear gas leaking with the tank all the way on dont get to worried just check the o-ring on the tank and replace it if you need to

unscrew the tank slightly until just before it begins to leak and then turn the marker upside down and fire it a few times and then the marker should sputter and run out of air in the system at which point you can remove the tank the rest of the way....if you just unscrew the tank without shooting the air out it will freeze the o-ring (when they turn white put a new one on).

it`s normal.co2 is in a pressurized container with a press valve .these valves release the gas when being pressed(like when you scew in) and when you scew it in completley the o ring would seal the container to the body of the marker.when you unscrew it there is a time that the valve is pressed enough to release the gas but the whole container is not pressed enough to stop the leak so as fast as you unscrew the gas container the less gas leaks because when you unscrew it completely the valve will shut the flow (cos it`s a press valve!) but be careful about the leaking gas cos in high amount the gas can couse the frostbite on skin.
i`ve experienced similar problem with poisk supplementary oxigen bottles .they have the same system of press valve that i had to screw in the regulator to the capsule.(oxigen bottle pressure is a lot more than the co2)

no it does not break it, the "leak" is purely the little bit of co2 the two from interior the macro line or purely that the valve remains open slightly after the seal is broken. that's time-honored yet would be prevented by using figuring out to purchase for an on/off asa (section that the tank screws into) that permits you to screw the tank in in the previous placing out the valve and close the valve in the previous unscrewing it. in spite of the incontrovertible fact that this is not needed.

A little gas ALWAYS escapes while unscrewing a tank. when it unscrews completely, it will stop.
