1) You need to ask questions to establish a genuine desire for suicide. Check out if he already has a plan. Ask specific questions, eg, Where are the pills now? where are you now? ...

2)After establishing a real plan, do not show any sign of panic. Take a few deep breaths. Speak firmly, slowly, instruct him to move away from or remove the items or 'weapons' of suicide; flush them down the toilet, etc... be creative!

3)If you are able to drive to where he is, tell him you will do so, after you hang up. Tell him to wait there for you, not to do anything until you arrive.

4)If you have someone else with you, you can continue to talk to him in a soft tone anything that's bothering him, let him do all the talking, keep him talking, while you instruct your helper to call 911.

5)Someone has to be with him at least for the next 12 hrs till he sleeps the time out.

6)When he is up to, the next thing you need to remind is that suicide is not the answer to problems. There are ways out of all problems. He needs to talk.

He may just be screaming for attention but at any rate he probably needs counceling, and quickly. Do not try to handle this on your own. Talk to a professional. Now!
