A USB transfer is easy if you understand that what yu are doing is setting up the reader or camera as an external hard drive (HD) and copy the contents to a folder on your deskstop.

I call mine the 1st dump folder... because that is where I always "dump" my images before I sort or catalog them on my HD.

If you don't transfer them they will remain on your card in your camera until you run out of space.

The USB cable should have come with the camera.

You can buy the Nikon Camera Control Software and then control the camera from the computer via USB. That's about as close as you will come to automatic. Otherwise you can set Windows XP so that when you plug the camera into USB the transfer starts automatically. It's pretty easy.
