What was the reason for which he converted to Islam?

Cat Stevens was living an ungodly life when one day he was swimming near a beach and he realized that he was drowning, at this moment he made a pact with God. He basically said that if God would save him that he would turn to him and worship him. That is what made him start his search for the one and true creator.

He is a weak, unstable man who has shifted between Christian zealotry (cf. Morning has Broken) and Islam, and back then I saw the segment of the interview in which he commented on the fatwa - he very clearly stated that if Rushdie had offended Islam, hew was supposed to die, so in that sense he did turn into a fundamentalist, a completely irrational robot following orders with no critical thinking. The new album was basically discarded as worthless by most critics, and the sales confirm that, so I think that there's no reason for anyone to keep an eye on the old Cat but the homeland security & terrorist watch. P.S. Commendations on your choice of Led Zep - and being so young, no less. Great!

Steven Demetre Georgiou, born in London, had a near death experience while surfing at Malibu Beach. After learning that Muslims are not allowed to have any fun or make any independent decisions he decided that it would be much safer for him to be a mindless follower of some dusty war lord. It should be noted that before converting he had no record of hostility toward his fellow man but shortly after converting he called for the death of Salman Rushdie, author of that factual book Satanic Versus.
Don't blame me, it's all a matter of history.

Because before everybody was like who the heck is cat stevens. And now he has atleast some fame so that he can sell whatever record he has. Or maybe he just wants to have sex with little girls as said in the Quran.

He nearly drowned whilst on holiday and apparently appealed to God, who he believes saved him. He tried out several different religions before settling on Islam after a receiving a copy of the Qur'an.
