How old were you when you obtained your license?? I'm 23 and I am saving up to go to hair school in another year. I got a degree and to a point I feel like I wasted alot of time (about 5 years of school and putting off hair school). Every since 3rd grade, I have wanted to do this, I used to draw hairstyles in my book all the time. I don't know I feel so stupid sometimes. I have a good job where I make good salary and commission but I cannot see myself for a long time, but I can see myself owning my own salon one day traveling to beauty conventions and just enjoying fashion. What do like most about your job???

Hello and Merry Christmas. I am a professioanl Hair Artist of 17 years now. I read your story and it felt like you were writing about me. LOL You are not alone. I went through the same thing you are going through now. I was 22yo and at that time had a job that paid really well but I was not happy with it. Only reason why I stayed with that job for so long was because I loved the money I was making. Yet my passsion was creating beauty. I kept telling myself that I'm going to enroll in beauty college and I'm going to do it soon. Well 2 years went by and I was still telling myself the same thing. At this point I hated my job so much. But I was so worried and afraid of leaving my job because of the money. It was a big decision I had to make. So I thought long and hard about my future. Hair & Make-up was something I've always wanted to do and I saw myself doing it as a professional stylist in the future. I told myself that if I don't make a move now then I never will. Well you know what, I went for it! And I tell you It was one of the best decision and move that I have ever made in my life. I excelled in beauty college. I did so well in everything from perms to hi-lites to mens and womens haircuts and facials. You name it I Aced it. Even before I completed the course and graduated I was doing up-do demo's on live models to the whole school. Today I am an admired and respected Hair Artist and also a Pageant Contestant Personal Consultant. My greatest reward is knowing that I was and am able to touch someone's life in a good positive way by enhancing their beauty and confidence in them self. What I'm trying to say to you is follow your dreams. Go for it! If that is what you see yourself doing in the future then that is what you should and will be doing. You remind me so much of myself. What you have is a gift. Use it or you might lose it. You are an Artist. You will go far in the beauty field. And you will not regret a moment of it. Except for maybe not doing it sooner. Better late than never. My best wishes to you.

This happened to a friend of mine. She got multiple process hair color, two of the colors clashed and the blonde turned brassy. Return to the hair stylist. Ask him if he really wants everyone to know he is responsible for the mess on your head. Word of mouth is important advertising for a stylist and they don't want an angry customer with bad hair walking around telling everyone who did it. These are the options you want to consider. 1. The hair stylist will refund your money in full and you'll go somewhere else. 2. If there is someone else at the salon who is a specialist in color correction they will correct your color and the original stylist will be responsible for any costs. If the stylist refuses the above options, ask to see the manager or the owner and tell them the options you will consider; full refund or someone else correcting your hair color for free, provided they are a color correction specialist. You'll also want them to provide a deep treatment to protect your damaged hair. Be polite when you go in, but be firm. Remember you have the upper hand not them although they may give you the impression that they don't care and you can't do them any damage. But you can always stand out in the parking lot and tell everyone headed that way to check out your brassy dye job courtesy of that stylist. Hope you get it all worked out.

Go dream your dream. Make it happen. What one person likes, the other one won't. It's a lot of standing. Be sure you wear good shoes with support.
If this is what you really want, go after it. You've gotta love what you do then figure out a way to get paid for it.
I taught at the local college......not a hairstylist. A good salary & commission is great, but you're not happy with it.....Just saying . . .

Same here. I went to college and got a crappy corporate job that I hated. I was afraid to leave to b/c of the whole $$ issue. I worked that stupid job and went to cosmetology school at night. It was taking too long, so, I took the plunge and quit my job, and when to school fulltime. It was the best decision I ever made. I am soo much happier now. The money isnt great to start, but once you build your clientele, it really up to you how much you make.

I don't think it takes too long for most to realize that you don't make alot of money in the beginning. I guess it chooses you. I gave up a great job that paid well but I didn't love. What I love most about my job is the rush I get. Its a technical job but as you develop your talent, its all art honey. How much you get out of it is how much you put in. Aim high and do the work it takes to get there! Good luck!!
